Wyoming Backcountry Pilots Association?

I am a member of the Idaho Aviation Association and the Utah Backcountry Pilots Association, but wounding if there is a NON-Facebook Wyoming Backcountry Pilots Association?

In addition in case any who fly Utah did not know, the Utah Backcountry website has an amazing ForeFlight pack that when downloaded propagates on your ForeFlight map.

My plane will be a northwestern wyoming resident in June, if all goes as planned, and I won't be to far behind it. Following this closely.

There isn’t really any backcountry strips in Wyoming that I know of other than Miracle Mile. There’s also Kinky Creek Divide which is private.

Re: Wyoming Backcountry Pilots Association?

There isn't much official, public backcountry flying destinations here in Wyoming. There is a small group of us in Lander that are going to start working to try and change that. One of our first priorities is to get a camping area built here in Lander, but it's an uphill climb to get that done. If you'd like to see that please call the City of Lander at 307-332-2870 to voice your opinion!

You can also see the website for our little coalition at https://www.lapahoa.org/ (Lander Area Pilots and Hangar Owners Association)

It's disappointing to me that Wyoming has so little especially given our positioning between Idaho, Utah and Montana. Seems we're the missing link, and the State should be doing more to take advantage of all the folks traveling through to visit the other backcountry destinations surrounding us.

We have had a conversation with our local BLM and they admitted that there's nothing they'll do to stop us from landing anywhere motorized access is allowed, so at least there's that.

Miracle Mile and Glendo are about the only destinations I know of. If anyone paying attention to this has any tips on good 'destination' class old forgotten strips let me know!

We are fishermen, so I’m in favor of locations next to rivers. Idaho is clearly the backcountry Mecca, with Utah being a close second, both have great organizations/associations that lead the way

Re: Wyoming Backcountry Pilots Association?

There are a handful of us fat tire fliers on the front range that spend a lot of time banging around southern and eastern Wyoming (Miracle Mile, Glendo, etc are all common haunts).

Possibly some unknown playgrounds might open up to us that we could share if there was an informal organization/association? WY BLM is pretty wide open and given a bit of scouting I bet we could come up with some informal way points and strip information to share with each other.

I fish near Kemmerer some, there is a bit of BLM near a river there but it had snow last I was up there about 5 weeks ago. My tires are only 22” so not conducive to wet/muddy stuff

How are these organizations different from The Recreational Aviation Foundation (RAF)?

I can speak for the Montana Pilots Association. These organizations have been around for a long time....since 1939 in the case of MPA. Unlike the RAF, we are focused specifically on issues and activities in our respective states.

That involves work parties, support of and influencing government agencies, both State and Federal, that have an affect on general aviation. When it comes to influencing agency policy, the more organizations speaking a similar argument the better, and MPA and RAF are often partners in those conversations in Montana, at least.

We work with Montana Aeronautics on legislation that can affect aviation. Recently, that’s involved legislation that has helped to fund many Montana airport maintenance projects, and in the last session helped expand the courtesy car program.

We are also one of the primary sponsors of the Montana Aviation Conference each year (except this year, of course). Which is a GREAT event. If you’re near Missoula the last weekend in February, don’t miss the 2022 conference.

Our newsletters help our members keep up on local goings on in this great state.

Re: Wyoming Backcountry Pilots Association?

I can’t be of much help this summer but later this fall I would love to help out getting some strips opened up here in WY. From my short time here in Powell/Cody seems like some fun is to be had in the north west corner also.

Gotcha.
Lander used to have a pretty good fly-in I went for a few years, still happening? I remember taking the low route around the Wind River Range, and the pass I went thru was still about 10K, awesome country.

Re: Wyoming Backcountry Pilots Association?

As one of the coordinators for the Lander Airshow & Fly In I'm happy to hear you enjoyed them! Between a runway reconstruction and Covid the airshow has not happened the last couple years. Watch out for something happening this summer though - we're starting to formulate a plan for a small fly in.
