Yet another Sportsman STOL cuff question

I realize there is a ton of info on the different STOL cuff options out there especially for the venerable 172.

I was wondering if anyone had experience with a Sprotsman cuff on a older 172 with the original Continental O-300?

Considering a 0360 STC is almost 50k I was wondering if a Sportsman or any STOL cuff for that matter would be "worth" it especially if I'm only bringing 145hp to the party.

A Sportsman STOL cuff installed out the door... I'm guessing $4000 to $5000?

I have flown aircraft with this setup. It does make a difference.

Re: Yet another Sportsman STOL cuff question

I have a 170 with O-300 and I feel the Sportsman was a significant improvement. No loss of top speed but way better low speed handling.

If you can find someone who will work with you it could be less than you suggest. Especially if you can live without paint, or prepaint black as someone suggested here.

80x42 prop is also a great mod.

Are you talking NET NET including labor? Cuff cost is the cuff cost. Install averages between 35-65 hrs depending on who does it and what quality of work they do. (there are certainly many levels of craftsmanship with this install....) $4k-$5k is a good average for the install.

I have done several and they seem to be in the 45-50 hrs for level of detail/finish that I am comfortable with. This is exclusive of paint.

You can shave time by less detail and a slap dash install. Price is dependent on shop rate.

Hope that helps.

Sweet! Thanks for the info! Looks like I'll be visiting ya BigRenna soon for the Sportsman install ;)

Eyeballing a 172G with low TT and 950 hour till TBO on a 0-300.
figure the cost benefit on the Sportsman install vs an 0360 STC is a no brainer.

LOL. I'd love it! It's really a great mod for sure. If you want to get the most bang for the buck in the short term, the sportsman, VGs, climb prop, and a bit bigger tires will make a really fun machine.

Regardless of who does it, feel free to give me a ring if you want to chat about it.
