Yoke Push to Talk Swich Replacement

Hello,

The PTT on our yoke is very annoying, if you push too lightly or too hard, it cuts out....very finicky. Considering a replacement - Can anyone recommend a part? It looks like I could just clip the wire, strip and recrimp to a new switch, but since this is the only PTT on a plane that lives at a towered field, would prefer something bulletproof. The yoke plate appears to accept a threaded type switch.

I was just pondering this very question myself. Getting ready to fly a 182 up through Canada and the PTT is questionable on its lifespan. The current PTT needs to be relocated back to the left side (because really who uses their throttle hand to talk on the radio?!) but at the same time, I might as well upgrade it to a new switch to alleviate any issues with an old used switch.

Not to be critical of the installation. I would lean toward modifying a traditional strap on PTT switch for a permanent installation. The quality David Clark or Telex used is quite high. A bit of Yankee ingenuity would result in a cleaner install minus the dangling wires, which in themselves is a high point for failure as well. I just happen to have one for sale on the board, which would be comparable in price for a decent quality switch, but with an enclosure that would make the install look and function more reliably.

One would just hack off the rest of the dangling bits and utilize the housing and its associated wiring. A method of attaching over velcro may end up being a cleaner install, seeing that the older yokes are not drilled to accept switches. Wrapping the yoke with something akin to bicycle tape or some of the leather available for car steering wheels would result in a more comfortable yoke and have the benefit of containing the wires.

The built-in type PTT installations are cleaner, but are a PITA to fix or replace if they malfunction.
OTOH velcro-on type PTT's are easy to swap out when they go gunnysack.
To install, you just cut the headset plug end(s) off & wire it into your radio/intercom harness.
If you give it a little thought, they can be installed cleanly also,
just pick a good place for the cord to penetrate through the panel and add a couple tie-wraps.
I had mine mounted for forefinger operation when I had the standard yokes.

When I went back to the rams-horn yokes, I mounted it for pinky operation.

I used one of these in my stick on an Ison Airbike. Works great & cheap.
