Re: You can't fix stupid

I feel a lot better after reading this thread, thanks to all. Some of the things I will never do again. [-X
1. Turn down my radio without turning it off. And I was wondering why approach did not reply, I have to wonder how many other pilots I stepped on, sorry for being a klutz.
2. Installing an oil filter without using a torque wrench, I changed the oil and made a four hour X country flight, landed and returned to the aircraft six days later, while fueling the aircraft prior to leaving, My wife noticed a puddle of oil under the aircraft, I responded that’s not from our aircraft, (I ALWAYS check the oil and for oil leaks after landing, and before getting in the plane) she said she saw it drip, the oil filter had started leaking !!!!  Conservatively I have installed over a thousand oil filters, this was the first one that I can remember leaking in this fashion. By hand is not good enough for an aircraft. There is little doubt that if I had taken off with this filter leaking I would have an inflight event. There are a lot of what ifs here, I feel lucky, and God bless my wife for noticing it. Ps, did not bother her a bit, we fixed it and were on our way.

Re: You can't fix stupid

Back in my flight training days in good old N6222R the 65 C150, I was doing my preflight and checked the oil. Unfortunately, I didn't pay much attention to the oil cap. It is supposed to click when it's locked. It didn't but I couldn't turn it any further so I assumed it was latched by the tightness. It was a nice gloomy day in Seattle. The best time to do some pattern work. I was out doing my touch and goes at KRNT. When on downwind I notice the oil light come on. I called the tower and requested a short base and taxi to parking clearance. Got the clearance and made a quick landing, pulled onto the taxiway, pulled the mixture and coasted to the FBO. Climbed out and went to check oil. Turned the corner and whole side of the plane was brown. The mechanic came out since he saw me cut the power so early. I explained what happened and offered to clean her up. But he just said not to worry. Next time he'd charge me for all the lost oil. LOL never flown a plane since with such a finicky oil cap.

Cowl Plugs!!

Early (dark) morning departure in a T-206, rushed preflight due to being late/cold. Start the T/O roll, see something fly by just out of right side vision. "Close call on a bird" I think to myself. 500' AGL, how come the CHT's are rising so rapidly - oh crap!! Chop the power to the minimum to limp back around, land, shut down and check. Yep, left cowl plug still there, right side gone. Sure am glad it left, allowed just enough air to keep temps from getting TOO hot.

You all are way to humble. When I blasted through class D airspace because I was playing with the pretty G1000 functions, instead of watching where I actually was. It was purely due to a radio failure.

Those ATC guys can be really gracious [-o<

Re: You can't fix stupid

A friend on his X-country solo approaches RWY 17 from the south then next leg it is rwy 13 for rwy 17. At least he could say that they were both airports he had never been to. he did get clearance for the Rwy 13 but had to land in a 45 deg x-wind. Never did it again.

Re: You can't fix stupid

The main runway at CYQU is 12-30. Advisory tower. Sitting there and saying 3 times that I was planning on departing on 33 while he was asking what? I thought my radio wasn't working well until he said "um, we don't have a 33... not sure why, but 33 is in my head when I land there, I wish I could say I've only done it once.

Anyone ever reach for the carb heat knob and pull the mixture instead? Sure wakes you up fast!

How about reaching for carb heat in a Citabria and being to far back and pulling the trim? Also wakes you up I've heard...

Re: You can't fix stupid

Along that line once in my citabria I was on final and had the runway made so what I meant to do was bring carb heat to full cold in case I needed to go around, I grabbed the trim and pushed it full forward. Never realized how quick the nose will drop when you do that. It woke me up right quick.
