Your first plane ride...

My older brother and his wife stopped Saturday. He had made a DVD with pictures from my mother's photo album. This one is my first plane ride. 1958-59 school year. I was in the first grade. We had a snowstorm that day. So my future step dad brought me( by door) and my older brother back from country school in his J3 with skis. Nobody knew he didn't have a license and nobody asked. They did know he was the best cub pilot that anyone knew of.

Re: Your first plane ride...

That's cool. My first was about the same time, but in the back of an Eastern Airlines Constellation. In those days, passengers were often welcome in the cockpit and I got to spend some left seat time - in flight! I was only about 3-4 so I don't remember much, but I remember later referring to the radar scope as the "pilot light." Then it was a long dry spell until my junior year in high school when I got a job and started taking lessons.

Best,

My first ride was in a V-tailed Bonanza for science class in the eighth grade. I think I was 13 at the time. Second ride was a champ owned by a rancher's son up in northern South Dakota while I was working on a combine crew at sixteen. Second ride was a lot more exciting than the first! HC

Re: Your first plane ride...

My first flight was with a crop duster pilot in a C-175. The pilot was a friend of the family's. I was hooked and knew right then I wanted to be a pilot. I still keep in touch with the pilot and send him all the pics from my flying adventures. Now that I have my Experimental going I can't wait to get involved with the Young Eagles program so I can maybe take a youngin on their first flight.

I think it was in a 182 or 172, can't remember .I was about 11 years old.I remember looking out the window at the Mountains that were RIGHT THERE! Mt. Whitney and all the other huge peaks. Lots of moonlight and snow. Unreal flight. It was awesome!

Re: Your first plane ride...

My first ride was Christmas in 1956 when I was 3 months old. It was on an airliner from Richmond VA to Sioux City. My first little plane ride was in my Dad's 120 Cessna about 1961. I rode the airlines quite a few times when I was a kid. Remember the pilot shutting down the right outboard engine on a piston job(probably a DC6) and remember the wings flapping like a bird in rough air on a 4 engine turbo prop Eastern Airlines.

A Braniff DC 3 out of Lovefield, TX to GA. 1965. I was hooked at the idea of flight but that cinched it for me!

I flew on lots of airliners since I was born...I grew up around a regional airport too, my dad worked there. I was hooked on aviation before I ever flew GA. I think my first GA flight was as a teenager in a Mouse. I got to do some flying and flew over my house, that was pretty awesome!

Re: Your first plane ride...

Rememeber mine like it was yesterday. I grew up on a dairy farm in north central MN and remember anytime a plane flew over I would stop what I was doing and look up at it and dream. Unkown to me, heck I must have been 6-8 years old, a Supercub on floats buzzed the house. It belong to a man my father knew. Well, he proceeded to land at a little pothole onthe edge of our property. I don't remember how fast I got down there but I would guess it was somewhere around WARP speed!!! He gave me and my brother our first ever ride in a plane. Ever since that day I knew someday I would fly.
Ironically my next ride wasn't until the day I joined the AF. Flew on Braniff Airlines and was served Lobster in cattle car section. Those were the days!!!
Took me nearly getting killed in an auto accident before I took the plunge and started flying. Bought my first plane, a 1960 172 after about 5 hours of flight time. Soloed and got my PPL in this plane. This was back in 1987....I STILL own this same plane along with a Champ and a couple of Murphy Rebel projects. You could say I was quite bitten by the aviation bug. :)
On another note...I still know the location ofthat Supercub that I got my first ride in 40+ years ago. It is a 1959 Model and is on its 3rd owner. Its for sale but the asking price is $25,000 to high. :(

Re: Your first plane ride...

I don't remember my first airplane ride. It was probably in our neighbor's Cessna 170, but I don't know for sure. I was pretty young. I do remember my first ride on an airliner. It was on a DC-3 from Madison, WI, to Chicago. I was 3.

I gave my daughter the opportunity to not remember her first airplane ride too. I had her up in an airplane within a couple of days of bringing her home from the hospital after she was born. She got an early start!!

In a Ford tri motor, on the way to Cedar Point Amusement Park, they were still used for small airline service there. I was 10. This would be the early '60's. Thanks again Uncle Milton!!

Must be cherry.

My first ride was in a 150 with the airport manager at Oceano, Ca. when I was about 8 or 9. My dad had given up flying several years before I was born, but thought it would be fun for me to go up. Might have been my birthday, don't remember. I do know I took a couple of old Flying magazines home and promptly memorized them. Little did he know the future cost he was incurring.

Re: Your first plane ride...

Not counting the Branif airways DC-10 flight in the mid 70's, it was three years ago in a Cessna 150. I'm sure the instructor still laughs aloud thinking about the wide eyed WTF just happened expression I gave him when we finally got back on the ground. It wasn't exactly a calm day. But, not being the brightest VASI on the runway, I kept coming back for more.

Re: Your first plane ride...

First plane ride was a horizon air or cascade airways turboprop PDX-Spokane, too young to remember the flight but I do remember getting myself locked in the bathroom some how. First flight I remember was a Horizon air Q400 on the same route flying our team to the State B-ball tournament in Spokane- this time I successfully used the bathroom without incident. Started to get interested after flying in a Huey on a wildfire, then rode in a friends Taylorcraft Corvallis - Madras. Decided I liked little planes after that..

Re: Your first plane ride...

First aircraft ride was 1968 in a Bell 47G Helicopter. Another kid that worked for the Forest service on the summer fire crew and I were flown into a little lightning strike fire. We had two smoke chaser packs, a chain saw pack and some one gallon canteens in the baskets and couldn't get off the ground. The pilot said throw out a couple of those canteens. Then we taxied down the pasture dragging the skids on the grass and when we had a little speed up we went. Landed sideways on a knife ridge at bout 6000 feet. the pilot hollered at the other kid (I was in the middle) "I'll hold it here, you get out and put some rocks under the skids so I can set'er down". That was some adventure.

Lots of helicopter rides the next 6 years. Almost all were in a Hughes 500 with 20 something year old Viet Nam Vet pilots. I was young and had no fear, just great fun. I got my first airplane ride in 1976 in a Cessna 180. We flew from Ellensburg to Cascade locks.

The first ride I didn't get paid to take was my first flight lesson in 1984.

First ride was with my soon to be brother-in-law in his 1946 Cessna 140. Which he still has. That was about 1971. Second was in a DC-9 going to Vancouver. That was when they would let passengers up in the cockpit to see the fun. Flying over the rockies on a clear day. It was quite a treat.
