Yukon...Prior Planning

OK...a Yukon trip is in the works for 2016 \:D/ . I'm a "prior planning prevents poor performance" kinda guy so...

We'll be taking the humble Pacer and a Super Cub. One pilot and no passengers in each plane. There's room for about 20 gallons of spare fuel to share between the two planes so we can get off the beaten path a bit. The planes are equipped with 26" tires and pilots that know how to use 'em. We'll have all the usual gear; sat trackers, camping gear, sat phone, survival gear, the "bare" essentials, tools and spares; and, like the 26" tires, we know how to use the stuff.

I'm looking for suggestions for good places to go. Atlin, Whitehorse, and Dawson are on the list but what we're really interested in are the more remote strips/gravel bars to camp on...preferably with fishing not too far away. Strips and or gravel bars near old mine sites are also very desirable! We're looking to "live off grid" for most of the time with one or two nights in a hotel to shower up...when the smell starts to offend even us !

We'll be launching out of either Prince George or Anahim Lake BC with two weeks planned to "git 'er done". Our route to the Yukon will be through Smithers, Bob Quinn, Dease Lake and Atlin. From there we have no specific plans. We have not set a date but sometime between late June and early September depending on what we can learn about the weather and bugs in the area at that time.

So...any input from the vast knowledge that exists in this community is welcome!

Oh ya...and if anyone is willing sell me a WAC D-12 Chart I'd be happy to pay a fair price! They don't print them anymore and I find them to be excellent for planning such trips!

Thanks Folks! I look forward to the bad influence you guys can provide me with :D!!

Re: Yukon...Prior Planning

Must see is the Tombstone mountains about 50 miles from Dawson City airport up the Dempster Hwy. Chapman Lake Airport about 80 miles out is a dirt strip along a river with some good fishing. Also the old mine site down on the Taku river. Talk to JM, he is based out of Whitehorse and I am sure he can steer you in some good directions.

Check out Burwash Landing it has Kluane Lake next to it. It has a gravel strip and pretty small village.Burwash is not real remote but you can do some pretty cool flying around there. During the early to mid 90's we based our 180 there duing the mining season.

Coming through Atlin let me know if you need a place to stay. I have a cabin just south of town and will be there (I hope) all summer 2016.

Re: Yukon...Prior Planning

With respect to the lack of WAC charts:
I recently purchased a bunch of WAC for Western Canada from World of Maps (worldofmaps.com). They print them out on demand, and the great thing about these charts is that both 'sides' of the WAC are printed on a single side - no need to buy two of the same WAC in order to mosaic them up on the hangar wall!

Thanks! I'll be sure to get in touch with them! WACs are just so much easier to use when planning a long trip!

I like this line. Trip sounds a lot more interesting and fun than the usual "fly to Tuk, slap the park bench, and fly back" plan that southerners have for the north. 2016....hmmm, I've already ordered my ABW 26".

Re: Yukon...Prior Planning

John, be aware that Dease lake has BY FAR the most expensive gas up there, so if you can arrange to miss it, (nothing special to see there anyway) you can treat yourself to a nice big dinner in Whitehorse. Relatively cheap fuel on Schwatka lake.

Thanks Logan!

Local Knowledge is everything! Good to know about the gas prices! Expensive here in PG too. Dave sells it way cheaper in Anahim!

Re: Yukon...Prior Planning

Another very neat place is Coal River just up the hwy from Liard Hot springs. They have about a 1500ft grass strip that was in great shape last year. They have a small camp ground as well as cabins/resturaunt and gas. Gas is 94 octane zero ethanol. A local guy with a stock 170 comes and goes pretty regular they said. We were driving but I made note that it would be a great place to spend a couple of days with a fishing rod.

Re: Yukon...Prior Planning

Speaking of gas prices, usually WH is pretty expensive since they figure most folks will stop there and will want fuel. Atlin fuel is generally cheaper than WH by quite a bit but you do have to call a local to get someone over to the field and turn on the pump.

Re: Yukon...Prior Planning

Silver City the SE corner of the Kluane lake across from the Slims has a nice strip and a Helio based there for Glacier trips and Univ. Edmonton or Calgary support. Always see pretty college girls there, super nice folks and they offered me supper last year passing through. You can camp there and spend a few days get adopted by the crew. I thought the name of the pilot was Jacque and he had his personal Pacer sitting there also. Here is a sample of what you see right there. Great base of operations if you have a few fuel jugs,,,,,
