Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

182 HD Nose Fork???

I have a good friend that would like to put a H/D nose fork and 6” wheel on his 1978, 182P. He has talked about a 206 fork, wheel and axel. I told him I’d post it here to get some expert advice on the upgrade. I know zilch about this upgrade but I’ve heard about it for years. SOOO, maybe some of you experts on 182’s and 172’s with training wheel can point us on the right direction, and yes, I know my 701 has a training wheel too.

Re: 182 HD Nose Fork???

Many threads on this here, do a search and you'll find plenty. Bottom line is no problem, a 206 or 310 fork is a logbook entry. I put a 310 fork on the 182 I used to have.

Re: 182 HD Nose Fork???

Do a search...there is a ton of info on here about just that.

Landes fork would be my choice. Keep in mind, if your going to do the heavy duty fork, ask yourself why? Odds are you going to want to end up doing the firewall beef up kit as well. Had one on my old 182. You can see it in my gallery.

Could be wrong but I think that on most 182's you need field aproval. It is only a log book entry on a plane that had the HD fork as an option.

Re: 182 HD Nose Fork???

OK, I found a 310 fork with everything still attached, (don't ask) for $100.00 locally. I fly a C175 with O-360/CS and have been wanting to upgrade as I fly into mountain strips regularly. Now I know I need a field approval, and think I can get that. What do I need exactly, will the strut fit my aircraft? Or will I need to remove the fork from it's current strut? Got plans to roll the 310 on it's side next weekend to access the delictable parts.

R U gonna mount it in back-where it belongs???
I know there is an STC for a tailwheel conversion to make it a 'real' backcountry airplane, but I don't think this is one of the approved wheels.......

OK, Pot. No, I'll keep it in front, much cheaper, and it will still do 90% of what I need. A reversable prop would let me pretend though
I figure 800 on the mains, should loose a few knots, but what the hell. :D
A gal I know has a 310 in parts laying in her hanger, a real party of parts. :D

Re: 182 HD Nose Fork???

Find an existing 175 (same year if possible) that has a 310 fork on it. Get a coppy of the field approval for that plane and do what is called a follow on approval. Copy it exactly. Easier than a start from scratch approval. If the Wheel is a cleavland then you got a really good smolen deal. If not a cleavland, then just a smoken deal.

I have done two of these field approvals on 182B's, the first a follow on and the second from scratch. You will for sure need a maechanic that is in good with the FSDO guy. Hopefully he has a picture of him with the sheep. :D

Re: 182 HD Nose Fork???

A 310 fork is the same thing as a HD 182 fork after you shave the fender attach points off the back. You will want the guts of your existing fork for the new fork, the 310 fork supports a lot more weight. Most 182's had an option for the larger fork. What options, if any, did the 175 have?

Re: 182 HD Nose Fork???

I don't believe there was a HD fork option on 175 certificate, however I believe the T41 came off the 175 cert, so who knows? So, I will look far and wide for a plane that has already been modified.

Re: 182 HD Nose Fork???

OKs , help me out here. Anyone have a field approval for a HD fork on a C175B? This would be much easier as a follow on approval. Gotta be be one out there somewhere........

Re: 182 HD Nose Fork???

My plane is a B model too. I don't have one for a B but I have one for an A model 175. They are basically the same plane. I am not sure where it is but I'll see what I have. At one time I had about 5 of them for 172's and 175's. I kind of gave up after a DER called the FSDO and they told him they wouldn't do it. I just figured I would have to fly somewhere else to get it done. I'll PM you and if I can find that stuff.

Re: 182 HD Nose Fork???

Got it, and I do have one for the 175B but it has a 7:00 tire. It is a really simple one. I can't find one that one that was very detailed with the tire worksheet and a couple more pages with part numbers. I have one for a home made extended baggage compartment too. I'll PM you to get an address.
