Re: 26 Inch tires on pavement

About to buy a set of GY 26’s. I don’t have sealed wheels so I assume most people are running a tube ?

Yep, use 8:50 x 6 tubes. I use Goodyear tubes in mine. Tubes are not cheap.

Re: 26 Inch tires on pavement

Can anybody tell me how to get approval to run them on the 180?
I would like to put a set on mine, but not sure where to start to get them approved.
Thanks

Scroll down to "Landing Gear / Brakes / Tires" and theres a section for field approval examples for Goodyear 26's. Take theses and ask your IA what they think.

Re: 26 Inch tires on pavement

Tires and tubes will run about $1,800 from Spruce. ( 26 Goodyear’s and Goodyear 8:50 tubes )

Re: 26 Inch tires on pavement

Difficult as Bushwheels have no tread to start with.

It can be argued that gravel/dirt is actually more harsh on tires than pavement.

Wrong on both counts.

MTV

He has 3 airplanes running them with n00b pilots, mostly pavement with some dirt. It's his experience, not mine.

What kind of airplanes is he running these 26 ABW’s on? How does he determine if he has plenty of tread left?

Re: 26 Inch tires on pavement

FWIW Svenn's Avation has an STC for the Pacer which includes both the 850 & the 26" GY.

I do have Svenn’s STC. Can I swap the tires myself or would I need a 337 to cover going from 8.5’s to 26

The simple answer is this change will require an amendment to your weight and balance, so your mechanic will have to get involved. Legally, an owner can change tires and tubes, but the W-B is going to have to be computed and signed off.

If you have never mounted aircraft tires, you might also want to ask your mechanic to walk you through it the first time, on one tire. Not rocket science, but it's not hard to pinch a tube. There are some videos on youtube as well.

Re: 26 Inch tires on pavement

Thanks MTV. I have changed out the tail wheel tube. That went fine .
I just had a shop put on an Alaskan Bushwheel side fork and 404 tire
Did 5 landings to test it out . Rolled up to the hanger and felt really good
Then I heard “ phhhht”
The tire went flat. Brought it home and saw a tear about three quarter of an inch long in the tube
Must have been pinched.

Those tubes are notorious for tearing, they have to stretch a looong way to fill the 400 tire. The beaver tube is much better and will last longer. It also helps to use a dremel tool and make the noth a bit deeper to compensate for the elbowed valve stem. ABI usually explains this pretty good when you switch to the beaver tube.

I hate to chime in as I don’t like confrontation but this isn’t correct.

Now maybe some single puck brakes aren’t up to the challenge. Or maybe some people do want to put that much pressure on the system to hold it. But I run singles on my pacer with 29s and a borer prop. I can hold it just fine.

Don’t mean to be an ass. Just want the searchable information circulating to be as true as possible.

Re: 26 Inch tires on pavement

Beaver tube just arrived. I know I have to drimmel the spacer to allow for the longer stem
How deep into the spacer did you enlarge the valve stem channel ?
And do you use any of the two nuts and one washer supplied with the tube ?
Thanks

I just ordered the parts for this tailwheel upgrade. Would you mind posting some more pics of the process and tube? Thanks!

Re: 26 Inch tires on pavement

First pic is the spacer that goes between your stock Scott tail wheel halves. You can see the notch for the valve stem. This notch works for the stock aero classic 4.00x4 tube but that tube is cheap ,thin and won’t hold up
So you need to order the 5.00x5 beaver tube
Goodyear part number 302-005-400
Next you have to notch the plastic spacer more because the Beaver stem is longer
I’m about to start putting it back together so I can post up more pics as I go

Re: 26 Inch tires on pavement

Tube is inflated and holding at 50 psi. I will install later tonight
I did end up using the brass washer and one brass nut on the stem to hold it in the correct spot
