Pops, do you still have the big tired Super Cub? Are you going to Caveman? If weather does not get any better we may do Oregon via Austin to Caveman.

Where did you fly today?
by courierguy » Sun Apr 22, 2012 8:47 am
20min. Of deadstick ridge soaring, at 9 to 10k. 29" airstreaks and foulding mountain bike and all, what every well equiped motorglider/ bush plane should have!
If I ever get up your way, these are the skills I would want to learn.

The faster I go , the farther behind I get.
GO T-CRAFT!!!!
What is the formula for power loss at altitude... 2% every 1,000'? So we're talking 52 horsepower?

Cool T cart... Big engine?? Looks like 26" goodyears? Fun planes.
Now ya got me calculating Courier.. 10,000' @ 60 degrees is over 12,000 DA an it says 3% per thousand, so that's more like 40hp... Ha ha.. Felt like less..

That's it, we've discovered your secret! It's one of those Harold Hamp electric starters that uses a Makita cordless drill, jerry-rigged to give you that extra power at altitude!

Sounds like something from a Red Green episode.

A Luscombe guy I know installed one of those. Believe me, it IS something from a Red Green show.

Cessna Skywagon -- accept no substitute!
The article in Sport Aviation some years ago is all I know about it. I'm sure it works, and it was a very clever idea to find a way around the A-65's lack of provisions for a starter. But it looked like the original installation and execution was not quite as elegant as it could have been if he had developed some sort of a box to hold the drill motor and "guts" instead of the blue hand drill casing.
The Red Green episode using a hand held cake mixer as an a utomotive power window upgrade had me rolling on the floor.
