Flying is dangerous. If you think otherwise, you are new at this sport. Mind the gravity not the gap.

Nice flying Joe, I would like you tell us the story about getting a under powered, small tired, non-stol airplane on the high mountains and back without hurting it. Did you ever get a new HD video camera yet, and if so what kind?

Re: 65 hp?? Heck Yea..

Pops, you might consider putting the skylight mod into that T-craft. Makes a whole new airplane out of it, and believe it or not it becomes even more fun to fly. I'll be happy to send you the drawings I made for my "no-welding" 337 version. OR there is a guy named Gregory Clayton in Alaska who has a full STC, however that one I believe requires welding.

You get another couple of inches' worth of headroom (compared to the fabric headliner), and very much improved safety / visibility. Looking through the skylight to the inside of a turn is a big improvement. You can put in an automotive tint film on the plexiglas to keep some of that Nevada sunshine under control.

Re: 65 hp?? Heck Yea..

Received my private pilots license in Colorado in a 41 T-Craft. We used to go fly in the mountains quite a bit. My instructor used to fly it back and forth over the continental divide all the time. 65 horse T-Crafts can do some amazing things. They earned a soft spot in my heart, that's for sure.

Back in the day, the 65 HP Taylorcraft was not considered underpowered in any way. Matter of fact, 65HP made it the hotrod of the product line until 1948 (Jack Gilberti's BC-12D-85). With a light load, the T-craft is definitely a STOL airplane. It's only shortcoming in the STOL department is in its lack of flaps or spoilers for precision landing approaches. In turbulent air it will not be easy to hit a specific spot on the ground with a short landing roll... because to land a T-craft short you have to slow it down pretty close to stall speed, making you fairly vulnerable to gusts and all manner of upsets. To a T-craft driver, that photo shows good flying skills for certain, but I'd bet there's a little bigger LZ behind the airplane than he would have needed in a flapped or spoilered airplane.

Give it up Pops... how much room did you have up there?

Got the skylight.. I really like it too.

This spot has a great little ridge, ya just have to wait for the right wind so ya can land it downwind and uphill to make sure ya can get a little help with the takeoff. It has a great view tho.

No, no video camera, maybe one of these days. I tried a couple and didn't like them, so sold em on e-bay. Prop flicker issues drive me nuts.. ha ha.

Re: 65 hp?? Heck Yea..

That is pretty cool. It must be technique, cuz' my 65hp J-3 feels like it would barely clear trees at the end of the runway let alone climbing high enough to land at that LZ. And a wood prop no less!

OK...OK... calm down... it's also old Pops Dory knowing how to use that T-craft's more efficient wing pretty good too

No problem starting.. Just gave her a flip. The mixture is wired full rich, no adjustment available. Fun little bird tho, and cheap on fuel.
