This is along the lines of my planned mount. Do you get any vibrations in your video or is it smooth ? I would be using 1080p 60 frames per second

It's worked very well, though you want to use a few joints as possible, and keep the length of the arm to a minimum. You can see how I mounted my arm closely aimed into the relative wind and its tucked up close to the wing. Would probably also help minimize jello effect by keeping it in the clean air, ie: not behind a strut or something. YMMV

I have a mount similar to Bart for my Drift HD. I do get a good deal of vibration. Enough so that I haven't really produced any useable video. Same a Bart said, I used a very short ram arm and orient it into the wind. My inspection panels might be a bit larger in that area.

I use electrical tape to attach a RAM ball mount to the jury strut. Then the arm and camera ball mount let me rotate the camera for a variety of angles. I get jello at airspeeds over 75mph...which is to say very rarely.

Have to say the cloud base engineering owner provides the best customer support ever!

I think getting a camera out of the prop wash and as close to the end of the strut as possible goes a long way towards eliminating the "jello" effect.

Now all we need is for GoPro to make a camera/battery combo that gives some duration or an IR remote that does not suck the battery dry like the stupid WiFi remote they use.

X2 on the Cloudbase mount. Very high quality and secure. Easy/fast to attach or remove.

Tom,

Thank you for the nice words on my customer service. Best to treat people the way you like to be treated.

In regards to the camera battery issue, I have been using the Brunton Battery for my Gopro 3+. It gives me about 6 hours of continuous shooting which means I can use the bluetooth again. They have a version for the Gopro4 but the interface is not as good as on the 3 so I have not bought it yet for my Gopro4. I am still looking for a good battery backpack for my gopro4.

Take care,

Marc

Hey Mike,

It works surprisingly well. If you have an older Gopro 3 and not the 3+ you will need a different front housing. Here is a link to verify you have the correct case. Basically if your front lens has screws around the bezel then you have the older housing. If you need a new one you can buy one on ebay for $10 ish. The Gopro 4 has the same front housing as the Gopro 3+. I am using my older 3 in the gopro 4 front housing to be able to use the Brunton battery.

On another note, any cool videos you have to share. Yours and Georgs seem to be the best examples of good bush flying.

Take care,

Re: Action cameras: how do you mount yours while flying ?

Thanks for the info Mark. I have the Hero 3+ so I think my case is okay, but I'll find out soon enough.

Your mount is still working great and all videos on my Vimeo page that were shot from the wing strut using a GoPro were made with your mount. I really like to use it.

I'll be making more when I go someplace interesting. I'm hopeful the extend battery life will let me capture more off airport landings and takeoffs that I just don't bother with now since I can't practically use the remote until the batteries last longer. I made a few this morning, in fact.

And last weekend, too.

Cheers,
Mike

Re: Action cameras: how do you mount yours while flying ?

After several iterations on mounting location and which "O" ring to use to absorb vibration, my Cloudbase mount is working really well on my M5-235C. I can film (video?) at 30 fps with no "jello" except for very a very minimal amount on full power take-off.

Have to say the support is excellent and Mark will go to great lengths to make sure your rig works.

The only gripe I have is with the GoPro itself. If you choose WiFi in order to not fill up your storage card, the battery is sucked dry in no time. Other choice is to turn it on before take off and then battery then dies due to videoing miles and miles of miles and miles as well as filling up your card. As a result I tend to mount the camera in the cockpit and take video through the windscreen.

My old video camera has an IR remote which does not suck the battery dry and not sure why GoPro went with WiFi unless their customer base does not operate the camera remotely for long periods.

Cloudbase many thumbs up! GoPro...meh!

We have used a gopro suction cup mount (rated to 160 mph). It may have even flown beyond 160mph. It is a really good mount if you have a smooth surface that doesn't deform much under load.

Pardon the thread drift, but I have been pleased with the Garmin Virb for that reason. You can set it to automatically turn on only when in motion, and you can turn off audio recording, since it's just wind noise anyway. Using these modes I've had very satisfactory battery life even in the cold. And x2 on all the praise for Cloudbase products and service.

Here's the trick: Choose wifi, but use the keychain remote instead of your phone. You can still control everything. Turn the camera off when you aren't using it. I did a test a while back and the gopro will stay in sleep mode for, literally, days with almost no power usage just listening for something to contact it and turn it back on.

As a bonus, if you ever run more than one camera it's much easier to manage them in this setup because you'll have multiple remotes instead of having to attach your phone to different wifi access points to manage each camera.

This is great news ! I'm using the Hero 4 Silver with wifi and keychain remote. So if I turn on the camera wifi so the blue light is blinking, there is very little battery drain until I actually use the remote to turn on and use the camera ?

Re: Action cameras: how do you mount yours while flying ?

I decided that it was time to up my game with respect to capturing aviation footage. I picked up a Hero 5 from gopro and the following mounting/filtering equipment.

Strut Mount: https://everythingaviationcameras.com/p ... rut-mount/

Ball Mount Adapter: https://everythingaviationcameras.com/p ... let-mount/

Camera Case: https://everythingaviationcameras.com/p ... ase-mount/

Filter Kit: https://everythingaviationcameras.com/p ... low-light/

The mounting equipment is all very high quality machined/anodized aluminum. The systems looks slick and well thought out. It wasn't super cheap, but actually pretty inexpensive considering what I received.

I'll be testing the setup this weekend and let you know how it all works.

Something else to look into, a different lense.

I put a IR cut 5.4mm on my hero4 and it made a great improvement for aviation and non super close up action stuff, not to hard of a install, screw the old fisheye out, screw she focus the new one on using a HDMI cord and a nice large TV.

Correct. As I wrote above, I have had it in that mode literally for days.
