The mounting equipment is all very high quality machined/anodized aluminum. The systems looks slick and well thought out. It wasn't super cheap, but actually pretty inexpensive considering what I received.

I'll be testing the setup this weekend and let you know how it all works.

Very cool. I'll be looking forward to hearing your thoughts and viewing the videos !

Installed the camera mount this afternoon. It seems so solid that I think that you could probably jack the plane through it.

Let's see some video! I would worry that the amount of connections and the leverage on the antivibration mounts would result in tons of jello.

Waiting for the removal of 16 inches of snow from in front of my hangar. I'll post some footage soon.

I made it out this afternoon and captured some of the flight with the new camera setup. It worked pretty well.

The mount was ROCK solid. There is no detectable movement in any of the 45 minutes worth of footage captured. The footage is also free from prop artifacting at 30 fps. I will begin experimenting with higher frame rates next. Gopros are usually pretty bad in low light, but this one seems to do OK with it. I think that the low light filter helps a lot.

The OAT was around 25 F and the battery life was acceptable, showing 40% after the camera had been working hard for nearly an hour. I have a lot to learn, but I think that this setup is a very solid foundation. Here are a few snippets of the video that I captured:

Looks good to me!!!! Makes me think I should copy what you did and then I could fly by wind turbines and corn fields. Those big blades are pretty impressive when I fly by them. 8)

That was nicely done. Beautiful scenery!

I was really impressed how rock solid the video was, I had to look up the company's website after I watched your video. Disappointed they don't offer anything for the Virb!

You might call up Ryan who I believe owns the company. He didn't have anything advertised for the new GoPro yet either, but when I spoke with him he had one and it was at the house in just a few days. I am very pleased with the products and service.

I'm sure that it would work well for that. I haven't used it in a bright light situation yet, but these cameras generally do the best when it's bright out.

Beautiful video, Jake! I bought a GoPro last summer but haven't figured out a mount yet, so this is timely.

(Loved the music too! :D)

Here is another one that I filmed from another angle in bright conditions. Anyone know of any tricks to manage the prop flicker?

That is indeed solid. Pretty impressive.

For the prop flicker, all you can do with action cams is put on a ND filter. But the problem with that solution is that is softens the entire image. I find it unusable. So my strong preference is just to not shoot with the prop in frame whenever possible.

It would be very interesting to conduct an experiment with one of these:

https://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-DMC-TS ... B004KKZ0KG

Not a traditional action cam, but ruggedized enough and cheap enough that I wouldn't mind putting it on a ram mount. The key is that it's a CCD chip doing the imaging instead of a CMOS chip. This means that the whole frame is grabbed at once rather than in stripes down the sensor. That, plus legitimate aperture and shutter controls might make it an interesting platform for our purposes...

Scolopax your setup looks very promising indeed. That is amazing footage straight from the camera, especially the low light parts and over town at dusk. And no jello that I noticed. Beautiful scenery, and well done !

Great video.

Can you explain the movement of the aircraft in the frame if your camera is mounted solid. First noticed it at the pitot tube at the top edge of the frame.

I believe that it is from the camera's image stabilization system. I have yet to try filming with IS switched off.

Yeah, some IS systems use image tracking, which will identify a point of reference, and move the image around within the frame to attempt to stabilize it, also cropping it in the process. Sometimes it can have a distorting effect as well.

This kind of post-capture stabilization is never as good as mechanical stabilization during capture.

I think the camera gyro got wobberjawed when it went inverted.

Re: Action cameras: how do you mount yours while flying ?

You could make your own... That mount with the quick release type mount was interesting. Could make one yourself with these parts, some steel and rubber washers, and a bit of steel or aluminum plate. Mount it to the tie down ring, use a couple of standard gopro arms to get it in the right position...

bolt mount

Quick position cam handle

Might be able to find those quick release cams cheaper elsewhere.
