Ya I had similar results on my 170, the VGs I would probly not do over, but any cessna I ever own will have a sportsman on it first thing!

Looks great!
River rat, just curious, have you ever flown a Horton STOL? I've never flown a cessna with a stol kit on it, but the 180 I picked up has the horton. Is it worth pulling it off to go with the Sportsman?

Great writeup with the new flight characteristics and pictures.

I also like the color scheme of your Cessna which is a classic.

Right on, I'm glad you like it! It's the best thing I did to my 170. I agree with river rat, any Cessna I ever own, this kit will be going on it. Once you get some more time flying with it and learn what it really can do, you will be even more impressed.

Great writeup Oregon180! You are STOKED!

My Sportsman kit is sitting at Stene Aviation. Unfortunately, I will not get to install it until next winter. Installed one on My 170 years ago, and it was worth every penny and every pound. It adds an unbelievable margin of safety to control during slow flight to one of the already safest lines of airplanes ever produced.

O-180

What is the effect to weight. How much weight does it add?

Can't wait until I can afford to do mine!

Great description of the flight characteristic changes with the Sportsman cuff. The power off stall with it is more like a nose high 500fpm controlled decent! It takes a while to get used to flying a much slower approach, but as time goes on you'll continue to be amazed at the difference. Congratulations!

Great mod write-up, Oregon180. I installed a Sportsman earlier this winter, but due to other airplane work I've only logged about .2 with it so far. And that was without benefit of wingtips, on a ferry permit.

I've heard that a Cessna wing with a Sportsman and VGs becomes so effective at clinging onto every last molecule of airflow that when it does stall, you're at the point of really having nothing left at all, and the stall becomes more violent than it would be with the stock wing. Was that your experience River Rat?

According to the instructions it adds 15 lbs at 22inchs. I used that for the new W&B calculation.
O-180 picked his car back up today and cant wait to put his 180 through lots of flying this summer.

Re: Added some weight to the plane. (Sportsman STOL)

I had a Horton with VGs in my 182
Removed it and put a Sportsman also with the VGs.

Approach speeds were reduced by 10mph and even now a 50mph approach feels more stable than with the Horton at 60MPH.

So its totally worth removing it to put the Sportsman.

I don't have VG's on my Sportsman wing so can't directly answer your question. But I can confirm Oregon180's comments. The only way I can get this wing to break in a stall is about 40, with no flaps heavy weight. It will give a slight shudder and begin a high rate of descent with no tendency to fall off on one wing or the other. With anything over 10 degrees of flap it won't stall.... just begin to mush at increasing rates of descent. It is an amazing mod. I think I've heard enough to not do VG's on this wing... but the Wing-X extension is VERY high on my list.

Congrats O-180... enjoy the Sportsman cuff!

Re: Added some weight to the plane. (Sportsman STOL)

The Sportsman / WingX is hands down the best mod I have done for certain. The aircraft lands at 38-40 (light) very easily with good rudder and aileron authority. I too removed my Horton with VG's for this mod and there really is no comparison. The Wing X gives you a slight sluggish feel and not the quick snappy stock wing feel BUT, who is making snappy turns at that slow of a speed anyhow. For me, landing and getting it in somewhere short is the mission. The extra wing and bonus useful load weight far out weighs any negatives with the sluggish roll rate. You can still barrel role the beast very easily... #-o

Anyhow, nice work 180! Your fired up!

Re: Added some weight to the plane. (Sportsman STOL)

I've got about 20 hours in a 185 on floats with Sportsman and WingX. That thing was a slow speed performer, even dragging those floats around!

If I ever own a Cessna, those two moods are going on it!
