Alaska to Alabama in 2015

Did you fly somewhere cool, take photos, and feel like telling the tale to make us drool from the confines of our offices? Post them up!

I just logged back on to edit my post and say "in case you have to set it down in the Yukon...or at my place!"

You should just come meet us at my place Darin. Then we can all share after you let me out of the trap! Haha.

Hahaha, thanks for the laugh! Visa will be in hand.

Good advice amongst the jokes and I appreciate it.

Re: Alaska to Alabama in 2015

Cam,

I'm in Whitehorse and customs was a breeze. I enjoyed the stop at Tok and visiting 40-mile Air. Weather is building in the afternoons now, so take early morning departures with a satisfied daily mid afternoon nap unless you want to get beat up and dodge showers and TS.

Also, I've never been impressed with Whitehorse. We loved dinner at Klondike BBQ, but the whole place is too touristy for me. Was also frustrating to wait behind a tour bus of blue hairs (no offense Gump) at the hotel and restaurant.

Really looking forward to following your trip. You have a spot or spider track, correct?

Buying an inreach, I'll post the link when I get it. Where are you crossing into the states? Nice to hear about Canadian customs!

Re: Alaska to Alabama in 2015

Are you guys carrying any firearms when you go to or from AK? I know there are limits on what you can and can't take into Canada, as well as the required paperwork. I was just curious if it is considered a must bring or not.

LMAO!

Deftly delivered, Brett--although you might have just got yourself uninvited from ever staying in Gump's palatial RV!

Shit, I'd be happy to have a little hair, even if it was blue!

A firearm, any firearm, wouldn't be a priority for me. Too much hassle, and my airplane doesn't lock......last thing I'd want is to have a gun stolen during a trip.

If you're worried about bears or Mounties, buy a can of bear spray, and secure it in a holster to a strut or gear leg.

Cool. Thanks for the thoughts. I remember the discussion in keeping the cans outside the plane. Thanks!

Good advice, MTV. I hadn't planned on bringing a gun but hadn't given it more thought yet.

I don't have time to look it up right now, but I seem to recall that Canada won't let you bring bear spray in either.

Re: Alaska to Alabama in 2015

Does the FCC Form 605 apply for both the operator's license and the aircraft's station license? I can't find another form to fill out that seems applicable...

Thanks!

Re: Alaska to Alabama in 2015

Have you considered doing the trench? Watson Lake to Mckenzie, and then the lower trench from Invermere to Golden, then clear customs in Kalispell. It's the route I took when I flew to Alaska and back last fall. IMHO, if you want to see some of the most pristine and beautiful country in North America, this is the route.

I took a pump action 12. ga ($25 permit) no one ever even asked to see the gun until I came back into the states and cleared customs in MT. Also took bear spray.

Not sure about the logistics with the FCC form. I ended up calling to get my station and operators license. In hindsight I wouldn't waste the money. Never had to show it to anyone, it seems as if the regulation is all but overlooked. However, sure enough don't buy it and.......

Also I second clearing customs in Whitehorse as opposed to Beaver Creek.
