A firearm, any firearm, wouldn't be a priority for me. Too much hassle, and my airplane doesn't lock......last thing I'd want is to have a gun stolen during a trip.

If you're worried about bears or Mounties, buy a can of bear spray, and secure it in a holster to a strut or gear leg.

I don't have time to look it up right now, but I seem to recall that Canada won't let you bring bear spray in either.

No, they'll allow pepper spray for bear protection. They will not permit pepper spray for protection from humans, as in the small concealable cans for personal protection.

Just make sure the can says "For protection against aggressive animals" or says Bear on it somewhere. If you use bear spray on a human in Canada, you might have some splainin to do, but....

Re: Alaska to Alabama in 2015

Made it out of ATL and about to depart on my last commercial leg to my sister's wedding. Only a few more days to pick up the plane! Grabbing an AC Form 8050-1 at the Spokane FSDO to avoid having to drive to Anchorage when I get to AK.

Re: Alaska to Alabama in 2015

The wedding was beautiful and now I'm back on my way up north. Briefed my Dad on the specifics of the trip and some initial expectations. We'll do a solid crew brief on day one to make sure we're both on the same page in the cockpit as far as duties go.

Our gear has been weighed, it's checked on my flight and it puts us under gross with full fuel.

My inreach has arrived and is charged, though I still have to start service. My VIRB is here and charged, and my ipad is setup with forefight and external GPS is ready to go.

Just relaxing and waiting for my flight north right now

Re: Alaska to Alabama in 2015

Glad your trip is off to a good start.

If you would like an alternative place to camp in the Whitehorse area, my dad and I have a lot on the airstrip at Carcross. About a 20 min flight south of Whitehorse. There will be a yellow RV8 parked at our place. Feel free to set up there. If dad is around I know he would be glad to have a visit. He lives just up from the strip.

Also have some good aviator contacts in Whitehorse if you need anything there.

You are also more than welcome to stop for a visit, or stay and camp, at Gordon's Field in Fort Nelson. This is our home place and we have several aircraft based out of here.

Hope you have a great journey. Give me a shout if you plan to stop at either place and we will try to ensure someone is around. 2five0-three2one-3zerozero7.

Nice! Plane ownership, traveling with your dad, the cross continental trip. Lots of elements of excitement rolled up into this. Hope you enjoy them all.

My one regret from both trips was that our mission focus precluded us from taking advantage of the meeting offers on here. Hope you're able to link up with some folks. A1 is itching for someone to stop in and I've missed him twice.

Hmmmm, slept in that pilot lounge a few times, and spent a lot of time there in Soldotna, miss that place.

Love the plane, enjoy the trip! One of these days i'm going to take my time and enjoy [-o<

What a nice looking machine! I hope it flies at least half as nice as it looks....if so, it'll be a great ride.

Fly safe,

The builder was definitely a "detail" guy! Looks very fast!

What kind of fuel endurance? GAL/HOUR vs usable fuel? Do you have a fuel flow meter?

Make sure you have an intimate knowledge of your range under different loading.

No fuel flow meter. Carries 60 gal and I'm planning for 9 gph right now. That's over 6.6 hours. Longer than my bladder.

Re: Alaska to Alabama in 2015

Thanks for all the comments! It's a wonderful plane and handles very well! I'm still getting acquainted with her but we had a long flight with slow flight, stalls, and patterns today to make sure I was comfortable for the trip. It looks like I'll get stuck in Anchorage tomorrow due to weather in the mountains but I'll evaluate after I grab my dad and we get some lunch. I'll post some more pics shortly!

It also came with a set of 26" Goodyears I shipped home and some beautiful custom wheel pants for these tires that I've got in the baggage for this trip (they'd get chewed up on gravel. Good for grass and pavement though.)
