Alternate to EEO (Meeker, CO)

Anyone know of an alternate airport close to Meeker? Was planning to fly down tomorrow for some house hunting and just found out the airport will be closed till about October to expand the runway  I don't know who needs a 100ft wide runway that frequents Meeker but whatever. Closest on the chart is Craig (45min by car). My quick trip down to look for a place to live just turned into at least 3 days and 16 hours of driving.

If you know of anything that is not listed on the chart please let me know.

Re: Alternate to EEO (Meeker, CO)

Welcome to Meeker. Rifle is the only other choice (Garfield County) and would be my pick over Craig. Pretty much the same distance but a better drive. Might as well get used to that drive as you will likely be making it a lot.
The Meeker strip get a lot of air tanker traffic during fire season depending on the location of the fire zones. Also I hear a fair number of light jet traffic in and out of there from time to time. Not sure why.
Good luck with your search.

5.4 miles ESE of runway center point is a nice spot...looks like a grass strip...1400 feet...

X2 on Rifle. Public paved strips are your best, and probably your only option. (Density altitude will be nearing 10k and your Luscombe will require some runway).

Re: Alternate to EEO (Meeker, CO)

Makes sense that they are making the runway wider is there is tanker traffic there. 1400ft is doable at the DA that will be seen this time of year but I can't find the land owners phone number and I'm not the kind of person that can get away with landing unannounced. Guess I will be driving or renting a place sight unseen :?

+1 on rifle. rangeley is probably better than craig, in terms of the drive but rifle is your best bet

Re: Alternate to EEO (Meeker, CO)

The weather is kind of crappy for the next few days anyway. You could fly commercial into Junction and drive up from there. About 90 minutes. Dirt cheap to stay in Meeker and you can see most of it in 2 days. Might not be a bad idea to find a place for a month or 2 and get the lay of the land before you sign a lease. I would look on the south side of town or between Meeker and Rifle. Most of the oil and gas activity is that direction and you will most likely find yourself headed that way more than towards Craig for supplies and entertainment.

You might want a runway with an approach the next few days. Rifle is fine. The grass strip mentioned above was very nice, but the owners at the time were not too excited about having visitors when I inquired. Great scenery there.

If Blaine Tucker is still in Craig he would be an excellent contact. Those guys have forgotten more about flying high DA's in that country than most of us Internet gurus will ever know. I don't remember the name of his outfit but they used to have a aerial application business and they shot coyotes for the government out of Super Cubs. Maybe still do...it's been awhile.

Tuckers are still there. Mountain air spray. Great people. Whee PM me if you would like more local contacts with options in the Meeker area. I work out of Meeker several months out of the year and am another West Slope native/local.

We were excited to heli in Silverton — until we saw the bird. Looking like something your stoner uncle built in the garage out of four Meccano sets, a fish tank, and an AMC Pacer, this helicopter seats a pilot plus two only, making it a tricky vehicle, logistics-wise, when your group has 8 people in it. If you could get Mr. Servo, especially his dad, or his brother to school you in that country...well...you'd probably learn more flying in an hour than anything else you've ever done in your life. Ever.

Re: Alternate to EEO (Meeker, CO)

Thanks for all the help. Very small chance I'll drive down early next week. Think I found a place through my future co workers. Looking like it will be a terrible flying year for me. With EEO being closed till October I will probably just leave the plane with my dad in Idaho. I was planning on taking the plane back to Idaho for the winter so it is likely I won't even bring it down till next spring. Sucks, buy a new plane (ok haven't bought it quite yet) then wait a year to enjoy it  There goes the idea of flying home once a month to see family.
