Anyone with DelAir 180hp STC (C172/175)?

Anyone with DelAir 180hp conversion out there?
I have an O-360-A1A with McCauley fixed pitch prop on C175..

My spinner cracked. DelAir quoted me $10,000 for another custom made spinner.
I refuse to give them business at this price.
Anyone has any other spinners with such an STC on their plane?
Thanks for any help..

Yow!

I’d call the manufacturer of the propeller......I’ll bet they can fix you up.

Thank you for a reply.
Are spinner options given by the prop theyre on or the engine types?

What's the part number for the spinner?

67790-1
But that is DelAir specific part # made by them and sold by them.
You cant find this part # anywhere on the usual parts markets.
DelAir is asking $10,000.. hence my desparate search for something else..

Re: Anyone with DelAir 180hp STC (C172/175)?

That's really ridiculous. If it were mine (mine's an Avcon conversion, not a DelAir) and I needed a special spinner, I'd be looking to a good prop shop for help. That plus a 337 would be a lot less expensive. Heck, for $10,000, you're into new prop territory! There's a pretty good prop shop at KBJC (Broomfield, CO)--I toured their shop, and I was impressed. An experienced IA would be a good thing to use, too, rather than trying to locate parts by yourself.

Good luck!

you asked if anyone has tried a weld, is the one you have weldable? If it is I sure as hell would try it. If it cracks again very little lost. There are shops in these threads that do that type of work.

Go to the Mccauley website and look at the fixed pitch application guide. See what else is running that exact propeller model/ engine combination. Don't be confused by length/pitch variations. Good place to start.

Re: Anyone with DelAir 180hp STC (C172/175)?

I'd be tempted to call the back and double check the spinner to be $10,000 alone. That's getting close to the price of the STC and kit.

Heck, that's more expensive than Tom Anderson's spinner for the TCM IO-360 and it's really hard to be more expensive than Tom on anything.

I'd try the weld. Or talk to an experimental spinner shop to duplicate the one you have ala Owner Made Part.
Or, like others have mentioned, find the prop/motor used on another airplane and check out their spinners.

Burl's aircraft might know something too. I believe they run the same prop/engine combo on their new 180hp sedan.

Having had lots of experience with Chris over the years at Del Air, I can say he is a very reasonable guy and super solid. I would guess that there is much more to this story than is being told.

I'm thinking the same. The STC and install kit is 15k. Can't hardly believe the spinner is 10 of that...

Find someone that knows how to spin aluminum and make one. It's not rocket science!

I have a AVCON 67790-1 spinner.
Was told its for a 180 hp & constant speed prop.
Never been installed, measures 12.75 diameter & 16.5 tall or length.
Its complete 3 piece.

Re: Anyone with DelAir 180hp STC (C172/175)?

I went down this same road about six months ago. I have an Avcon conversion with the fixed pitch (sensenich) prop, needed a spinner. I called Del-Air and they wouldn't quote me but told me to call them back in a few months.... I ended up searching what other aircraft used that same engine/prop combo and was delighted to find quite a few. I ended up picking up a Cherokee 140 spinner for a song, bolted it on and never looked back.

I am in this boat right now.
Can you please provide me with the part number. Also did you have to get field approval for this?
I also need the fiberglass nose bowl and would really appreciate some help on this. Chris's lead time on this is really unknown and I have everything else bolted on and ready to go

Re: Anyone with DelAir 180hp STC (C172/175)?

How bad is the crack? During my first annual my mechanic did not like the patches / repair on my spinner and wanted me to source a new one. Instead I sent it to https://www.spinner-repairs.com and for $500 they fixed it and sent it back. A little filler and paint and the spinner looks new. I would give them a call and save some money. They are an approved FAA repair shop and includes all appropriate paperwork.
