Appreciate what we have... Other Forums no so much

Greg, after 25 years of continuous membership in TIC170A, my family has been permanently banned as well.

My posts didn’t align with the views of one of the moderators so they were being altered/moved/deleted to suit his agenda. Needless to say, this wasn’t going to work for me. It’s really just one bad apple moderator but the association leadership lets him operate with impunity and no repercussions.

Honestly, I saw the writing on the wall when they did the same thing to you years ago.

I suddenly have a bunch of money that used to go to the association with no purpose...BCP seems like a good home for it!

I hope to be more active around here and look forward to attending some events to meet new friends.

Your content/contribution was always appreciated on the 170 board. Glad to see you posting over here brother! Welcome.

Now... if I can only convince you to remove those wheel pants! LOL

Someday! [emoji16] When they do finally come off, it’ll be to install some bigger rubber.

It is a shame that this has continued for so long. I dropped out for similar reasons, I just wasn't vocal about it. I imagine there are others who've done the same. Nice to see BCP is doing so well.

A really helpful thing the 170 crowd can do right now is contribute to the knowledge base article on the 170. There is a lot of knowledge on the 170 board that will get lost if we don't work to transfer it here.

As for me, I'm a new 170A owner, so I'm still learning. I did visit the 170 forums, but never really registered/posted because it looked like a huge pile of politics, which I'm not interested in.

I'm in the process of making an initial stab at that so we can get the ball rolling. It seems like each thing I try to list could turn into it's own article so there is plenty of room for contributors.

Example, I'm already thinking about micro articles on lessons Ive learned from installing certain STCs (like the baggage door)

Perhaps you can post an outline (send it to zane) and once we have the outline together people can pick up various sub parts.

I'm happy to contribute, but someone like you needs to oversee since I'm still pretty green.

Zane created the template for us. I'm taking a first pass and will have it back to Zane in a day or so.
At that point, people can add to / correct data as needed.

It will live here

I like this approach. It's not like a feature article where it's a big story so you only have one chance to impress. It's a knowledge base so using principles of tech writing, with revisions and iterations is totally fine.

It's totally acceptable to create a "tree trunk" and stubs for whatever we think could be useful. You'll see it throughout the knowledge base...had an idea but no time to totally flesh it out.

Welcome 170 peeps. My love affair with the 170 continues post ownership, thanks to some good friends. Happy to provide a foundation.

Zane, I'll send you what I have tonight so we can get it up and others can help.
I might have been trying to make too much of a Grand Opening out of it.

Gregg I know how you feel. Been punched around by Bruce and George as well. And Zane my hats off for such a wonderful job you do. I however cannot deny the wealth of info on the 170 site contributed by other members. Was concerned about getting a supercub and not having a resource like that available to me until I spent some time on supercub.org . This site will never have the wealth of info any type specific site has. So as I said to my daughter last night "life is a bitch get used it". I don't have to be friends with Bruce and George but when I had my 170 I definitely needed that site. It is a shame they are not better moderators. Might have to go to their convention next year as it is in Cody not just to see the 170s but to see if Buce and George are dicks in real life.

I’m sure George doesn’t have the stones to do it in person based on everyone I’ve talked to that has met him.

I tend to disagree with the information on the site. Unless you're trying to make a faithful reproduction of a factory example, there is very little type specific data on the 170 that isn't shared with the 172, 180, 140 or even the L-19 in some cases. If you're a new comer to 100 series aircraft, the 170 association has the convenience of a lot of stuff in a single pseudo searchable location but, I've learned more about this aircraft in the last year talking to people not on that forum.

I don't think the data they possess is worth the price of dealing with the King when I can ask the same questions here or other places and get that same info with a pleasant tone.

But, if you need to know the exact paint code for Lima Tan or what shade of red was available in the 1952 model and if the tailspring was originally black or gull grey or the difference between a C-145-2H and an Op-300-B...they have that data well organized.

I have what is probably the best library in the world of original 170 owner’s manuals, spec sheets, sales brochures, etc.

We can scan and upload all that data here David.

Life IS a bitch, but you don't have to get used to it 8)

Years ago i wanted to improve on the Cessna 170 knowledge, so I created a site called cessna170guide.org. It lives on to this day, but I've not worked on it in 8 years. It used the same software as Wikipedia, which is vastly superior to storing knowledge and reference data in a discussion forum. The 170 guys rolled their eyes at me, maybe because they felt I was encroaching on their thing. When I sold my 170 I offered to give it to them free of charge but the response was a little insulting. "Sure, ok, but you'll have to sign something stating you have no claim to it."

Haha, okay...

I think with the power of better software and being flexible we can create a superior knowledge resource. We have guys here who are technical and sharp, in both software, systems, and the aircraft types themselves. The one thing that is impossible to reproduce is the aged owners and mechanics who don't, won't, or can't participate at the computer level.

Type clubs are strong because they have a singular focus. Who's to say having a knowledge base of many types isn't even more powerful when you can share information on mods and engineering data that may have broad applicability across types?

There will always be a technology gateway to contributing. The uploading of photos, documents, etc is easier for some than others. Then the curation and organization of that data is another task. Get enough cooks in here and we can surely blow something up.

I can prop up an easy file uploader for those who want to upload scanned PDFs directly, since our photo gallery doesn't handle them well.

There are always tools like Dropbox and Google Drive though. It's easy enough to share files that way just using my email address.

We have some good info among the current 170 owners already on the site. It’s just a matter of putting in the work to organize it.

There is nothing that we have done to keep our 170 flying over the past 25 years that absolutely depended on information from the association.

It’s not rocket science and these airframes and engines have been vetted out pretty good over the past 70 years.

Zane, you built the cessna170guide.org?
You stopped working on that site right at the time I got my first 170 and i remember the conversations on the forum about taking over maintaining it. Small world. I remember thinking they were crazy for not helping with the wiki page as it's such a better format for storing data . I thought you turned it off for some reason.
