Re: ATR 72 Crash in Taiwan

Couple stories now confirming the pilots shut down the wrong engine, of course as previously noted the news is often wrong.

Confirming shut-down and feather of the correct engine is my airline's number one priority in training. Many crews have gotten confused by this, it's scary. These airplanes have great performance even on one engine. That's important to remember, especially when it all hits the fan. There's time to slow down and fly the airplane first, then make sure you don't make the situation worse.

You mean the news is saying that the pilot shut down the wrong engine....which meant they lost both!

Early this morning all the Useless today was saying is both lost power and the why was under investigation. When I got to the plane, the guy I was flying with said he had heard on the news what others here have since mentioned...that they secured the wrong engine. Since I've been out of the country and airborne most of the day, I've not heard if that is the case. Like was mentioned before, that's a big focus point in training at every airline I've been at (even in getting multi if you think about it). But in the airline world it is extremely stressed. Point, annunciate, verify, then act with the other pilot guarding the good engine. All done with slow hands. As has been previously stated if everything else is going okay the airplane will fly fine on one engine. On the bus we have six irreversible items. You can guess why they're called that!
