Aux Fuel

Does anyone in the BCP community know of a source for aux fuel bags, something in the 5 gallon range I want to carry them in the float lockers

Re: Aux Fuel

No doubt the purpose built bags are better but I’m still using the Swiss Water bag I bought 5 years ago for like $20.

Re: Aux Fuel

I have several of these. Expensive I suppose compared to the $20 bags.
I have no idea if they would fit in your float lockers.

I know an Australian named Laurie Sexton who used the Turtle-pac system (bladders & pumps). He flew a 182 from Florida to “Brissy” , crossing the Pacific. I met him several times in Hervey Bay.

Hawaii is littered with ferry tanks from both aircraft and yachts! Nice to see the pilot take the tanks home when the journey is completed!

Re: Aux Fuel

I prefer hard jugs, easier to fuel with a shaker siphon in the bush:

https://www.imtra.com/other-products-na ... -tanks.htm These are super tough, I've had one, a 9 gallon, for some years now. Not cheap at first, but when you're low on fuel, inexpensive! It has made the difference numerous times to enable me to get home rather then buy fuel enroute.

These look like a reasonable option for my intended use. I'm curious what you think of the opening, it looks small in the pictures how is it for filling ?

Cheers,

A kind offer sir but I would struggle to lift 20 gallons of avgas up to the wing, especially on floats I'm not the Spring Chicken I once was.

Many other guys on here have much more experience with them than me so hopefully they will say something.

Filling the bags at the pump is no problem. Filling the plane with the bags is somewhat annoying because the outlet is small. For a while I’d drain a bit through the spout then once down a bit I’d screw the cap off and just pour the fuel in. I think removing the cap and pouring into a Mr Funnel would be a good option. I’m too lazy to stand there and hold the bag so I modified a cap with a valve and hose from the hardware store. Lay the bag on the wing, stick the hose in the tank and open the valve.

Re: Aux Fuel

Jiggle hose from a can or Bushwheel bags with a spout are about as easy as it gets!! No fuel down the arm and all over the wing.

Re: Aux Fuel

A ferry tank that doubles as a "get more fuel" container, (if that's a need, if you fuel exclusively at airport pumps, it's not of course) and is also capable of in flight transfer via an electric pump, gives me a lot of options. I have never spilled one drop of fuel on the top of the wing due to over fueling, and that's at 2550+ hours and almost exclusively fueling with containers. Kind of hard, in my plane anyway, to see the sight gauge when you're standing on the tires dumping fuel in the top of the wing. Pumping up from below, it's super easy, safe, and convenient. I let the transfer pump do all the work, and I just eyeball the sight gauges and when topped off there is no surprise! Most important, I get every drop of fuel in the tanks possible, for max range, all without any risk of overfilling. It helps having a sub 4 GPH burn rate of course.

Re: Aux Fuel

These are great. I have been using them for a few years and really like them. They also sell a fill pipe that is clear with a shut off. Makes filling very easy. I just put the bag on the wing and fill.

Re: Aux Fuel

Anyone used the Airframes Alaska or Sky Cowboy Supply "liquid containment bags"? They look very similar in design, and I'm just wondering how either one matches up. Do they seal 100%? Are the nozzles easy to use on a high wing?

Re: Aux Fuel

I did a lot of long flights with Aerocet 3500 Floats and VP racing fuel jugs.

VP racing jugs hold about 6 gallons each and work very well, they are also not very expensive. I think I paid around 20-22$ each for them. I have about 25 total.
