Re: Bart's Flight Log

Great pictures Bart, some really stunning. Would you buy the X-E2 again? What made you choose that model over other models from Fujifilm or other manufacturers? I'm camera shopping now.

That Staggerwing is incredible.

Thanks.

To be honest I'm more of a "monkey see, monkey do" type  I saw the results that some were getting from this camera and after a few beers, went on eBay to satisfy my impulsivity. I'm too new to cameras to give any worthwhile advice to you, but yes, I would buy it again...though thats not saying much

I see you've replied on the "Grab and go" thread, you're better off there!

In that thread, "Hammer" described me when he said this: "The “kit” lenses that come bundled with cameras are generally mid-range zooms and very slow. They bundle them with the bodies at low prices to make the bodies more inviting to amateur users" #-o

Thanks again.

Hey Bart,
Please don't take my statement about kit lenses as anything even remotely disparaging! An "amateur" is just someone who doesn't feed himself off his efforts, not someone who doesn't know what they're doing.

I'm a quality fanatic, but most people are not well served by spending 10~12 times as much for a lens that's two stops faster and twice as heavy.

I didn't take it as disparaging, really :D Mostly a tongue in cheek statement on my part

Just the "kit lens" for now. 18-55MM 2.8-4 zoom lens. I think the next will be the 55-200mm zoom (telephoto?)lens, then maybe a 14mm prime.

Hey Bart,

When you start going wide angle you almost can't go too wide. If you get the chance check out this lens: Carl-Zeiss 12mm f2.8

Image

For what it's worth I use my wide angle lenses about 5 times more often than my telephotos. Anything past 80mm really suffers from camera shake if the camera isn't steadied against a solid surface, and at about 130mm it's hard to get a truly sharp image without a tripod and a remote release or timer.

Nothing wrong with any of that, just don't expect to be hand-holding at 200mm, or even 120mm most of the time.

Bart

Really like the Mustard Meadow pics. Looks like the first two might win a front cover position.

Wannabe

PS: Now I know where I saw that barn :D

Nice Bart. Already missing my yellow bird with the black lightning bolt. Love the pics of Wilson.

Re: Bart's Flight Log

You asked for constructive criticism, but I'm unable to find any. Your composition is much better than the average amateur photographer. Your choice of focal length to bring the background in closer is a very good technique. A longer focal length lens would allow bringing the background even closer, but handheld without optical image stabilization, there are practical limits to how long a lens you can use. Lighting choices are very good and your selective focus shots are also good.

My humble appraisal is the shots you have shared on this thread make it into the top 10% on the forum.

BTW, my first business in 1971 was Primo Photography. Long before digital, where format size (today that would be sensor size) was king. I didn't use 35 mm much, instead 2 1/4 X 2 1/4 and a Linhof 4X5 sheet film camera. Today with digital, I'm the opposite. Since even the smallest sensor can pack 21 mp, I like the power of modest size lenses as they cast their image on such a small format. To contrast this statement, consider a 180 mm lens was the standard lens on my 4X5 film size camera while a 8 mm lens is the standard focal length for my digital with the very small sensor of 1/2.3 inch (6.2mm x 4.6mm). A small sensor allows for a very good optical image stabilization and crazy long zoom ratios of 50X.
