Have you gotten a quote to outsource the migration? How much is it per current subscriber? Maybe we can fund it, and you get to keep your life!

Yes, I would much rather just work on the Bearhawk, but the site does make a little money. Costs are mostly covered for what we do now and there is a little left over to buy aluminum to replace the piece I just screwed up! I look forward to the day when there's budget to visit more of you and make films.

Hi Zane:

Make it a paid forum. If someone can afford an airplane they can afford $5 or $10 bucks a month to pay for the forum. That's 2 latte's at Starbucks a month, I know enough people who spent more then that in a day at Starbucks.

I think most donate some amount anyway. I like that the site is free until you decide that it's valuable enough to donate towards. It seems like the current approach allows folks to jump in and get comfortable as opposed to getting scared away by a bill for an unknown quantity.

Thanks Zane. It is fine the way it is. It is worth the $9.99 a month auto Pay Pal.

Cheers Rob

Re: BCP 4.0...the time has come

Zane,

I run a couple motorcycle forums (several thousand members each) and have gone through this dilemma before on both, including a change from phpBB. I've learned a bunch along the way, not just about how software and server choices can make or break your sanity, but how changes to the look and feel actually affect community participation. Also had to transition myself from "managing" the community to just being a participant because life, kids, etc get in the way. PM me, let's chat. I doubt I can lay out your path for you (I'm not the forum whisperer) but maybe some tidbits of insight will help.

If, as a community, we can help you by working up the knowledge base - perhaps data migration becomes less of an issue?

The stuff people want to search is mostly about aircraft models, techniques, places, and some technical data about engines / props / mods. If you can save that stuff to the KB, then our quibbling and banter is hardly worth retaining. I don't electronically record every spoken conversation I have, and in kind, I wouldn't expect you to do a lot of work to retain our written conversations. In some ways, some threads are best deleted rather than kept alive any longer.
