1. Unlimited HD uploads for free.
2. Ability to share a video with a URL that specifies a specific cue time.
3. More robust content distribution network. Sometimes Vimeo gets overloaded.
4. Five different quality settings for the viewer to choose from, from 240p to 1080p.
5. A full mute-capable volume control.
6. Scrub-preview in the player timeline (shows a tiny thumbnail of what the video looks like at a certain time.)
I originally started using Vimeo in 2007 not long after they started because their differentiator was HD video, but Youtube quickly caught up on that front. They do have in-player ads and a music identification algorithm, but it's because they also let their users monetize the videos, which can't happen on material copyrighted by others. Vimeo doesn't bother with that, which is why they don't enforce the copyrights, at least for videos which haven't been flagged.
I do like Vimeo from the standpoint of the community. It just has fewer douchebags who want to argue in the comments, and is definitely geared toward the amateur filmmaker. To upload more than one HD video per week though, you have to purchase their premium service.
