I use Vimeo only because YouTube tried to sell me music and/or kick your videos out because of music. No complaints with Vimeo, works great.

I use both Vimeo and Youtube. They each have their advantages and disadvantages.

Re: Best video site to use?????

I use YouTube but if I had it to do all over again, I would use Vimeo. I have too many clips on the tube to change now.
The music selection on YouTube is pretty lame and it will kick your vids out if you try to use any other music than theirs.
Zane, what's an advantage to using youtube over vimeo other than traffic volume?

1. Unlimited HD uploads for free.
2. Ability to share a video with a URL that specifies a specific cue time.
3. More robust content distribution network. Sometimes Vimeo gets overloaded.
4. Five different quality settings for the viewer to choose from, from 240p to 1080p.
5. A full mute-capable volume control.
6. Scrub-preview in the player timeline (shows a tiny thumbnail of what the video looks like at a certain time.)

I originally started using Vimeo in 2007 not long after they started because their differentiator was HD video, but Youtube quickly caught up on that front. They do have in-player ads and a music identification algorithm, but it's because they also let their users monetize the videos, which can't happen on material copyrighted by others. Vimeo doesn't bother with that, which is why they don't enforce the copyrights, at least for videos which haven't been flagged.

I do like Vimeo from the standpoint of the community. It just has fewer douchebags who want to argue in the comments, and is definitely geared toward the amateur filmmaker. To upload more than one HD video per week though, you have to purchase their premium service.

Re: Best video site to use?????

I tend to prefer Vimeo, as I find the overall experience of Vimeo to be more enjoyable, but also upload to Youtube. I find Vimeo's 500mb upload limit is a little constraining for HD and I've had occassional trouble with their uploader. Also, I can't watch embedded videos on my iPhone that were uploaded to Vimeo. So anything embedded on BCP that's on Vimeo, I have to watch from a computer.

With Youtube in addition to the ads popping up all the time, if I have copyrighted music in the video, I can't view it from my iPhone either.

Re: Best video site to use?????

Remember also that youtube is only doing what you were supposed to be doing anyway, not copying peoples content without their permission. I don't really have an issue with content creators saying they don't want me to use their music in my videos, but I do wish youtube had a way to search so one could determine whether or not the copyright holder was willing to allow you to use their content.

I finally just decided that if the majors are don't want me to give them free money (via ad clicks) then fine, I'll spend the effort to find emerging artists that want the exposure.

Re: Best video site to use?????

Youtube used to scrub your audio track if your content was copyrighted, but then switched to the current method of just identifying the song and artist and not letting your video be eligible for monetization. The crappy part is when they don't allow it to be available on mobile due to the preferences of the copyright holder.

One of the coolest features I've seen is the "tip" option on Vimeo. If you're a PLUS user you can add a tip button to your video where people can kick you an arbitrary amount if they feel so inclined. It skips the middleman of advertising, although I'm not sure if they take a cut or not.

Does that mean I can use any music I want if I don't care about monetization?

Not sure how I missed that but that is the best news I've heard in a while. I would love to score my videos with better music.
Thanks!

No.

Copyright holders can now choose to not allow, allow with monetize or allow their content to be used. There is no way to know in advance which they have chosen, so you could easily spend hours on a video only to upload it and have it be blocked.

The partial work around is to search youtube for the content and see if someone else is using it un-blocked, but even that isn't 100% reliable. For reasons I don't fully understand I've been able to find content available on youtube, create a video using that music, upload and have my video be blocked.

Also be aware that content owners can block on a regional basis. This is a pretty US centric board, so maybe people don't care much, but content available in the US might not be available elsewhere and vice versa.

Re: Best video site to use?????

While it doesn't get around copy protections on any of the sites, I do try to do all of the following.

1. Purchase the music I'm using
2. Credit the artist for both the artist and viewers sake.
3. Adulterate the music, at some point, with airplane or wind noises so it's less valuable for someone else to rip off, except for you airplane nuts out there. [-X

Nice video M6RV6. Wilga's are such funky cool airplanes.

Re: Best video site to use?????

Great video GT.

I use youtube and I monetize most of my videos (I think I make about 5 bucks a month from the ad clicks). In my opinion, simple videos with light editing and no music is fine. Heavy editing that goes along along with the music is even better. Whatever you choose, as long as you enjoy it, that's all that counts.
