Biannual Flight Review

It's been over three months since I have flown/rented. Im thinking it would be best to go up with an instructor and since my biannual flight review is due in August i might as well do it at the same time. I assume I could do my flight review in July even though it's due in August, correct? If I do that my next flight review would be 24 calandar months from July instead of August. seems pretty straight forward but never now with the FAR sown times.

Thanks

That's correct. Adding a rating also resets the clock. Better yet get your TW endorsement & have your instructor do a BFR also. If your going to rent to do it, might as well be advancing your studies! :)

I'm with L-19. If I ever quite flying airplanes that require a yearly ride I plan on adding a seaplane rating, it isn't much more than renting an airplane and instructor for just the BFR.
Just thought of a question, do the sport and recreational pilots require a BFR? Can't say I have ever looked at those requirements.

Yes, all pilot ratings require a flight review. In the case of a higher rating, you keep your current pilot rating, just stop renewing your medical and start flying under sport pilot rules.

Really? Man that sounds like fun. With who where etc.? I'll be getting my BFR as part of my insurance requirement for the Luscombe. Next go around I have thought about the instrument. Not because I ever intend to fly them but because I think it's the only rating that pays for itself over time. Less insurance cost. Problem is, it costs about what a paint job costs.

Insure with AVEMCO. They give you an annual 5% discount for attending a safety seminar or two, and another 5% for an additional rating, etc.

Re: Biannual Flight Review

Even if you never use it the instrument rating is probably the most important rating you can have and other than buying a type rating at one of the big simulator based schools the most expensive.
I forget the name of the schools, but there was a thread here about a year ago about seaplane ratings. Your travel expenses might make it more expensive than a local BFR but I bet it would be a heck of a lot more fun.
Thanks for the answers regarding BFR's, I thought that was the answer.

Another option is Upset training and Spin recovery. A buddy of mine just got his Bi-annual done while getting Spin Recovery training in a Pitts. A whole lot of fun and great experience too.

No doubt it is good to polish skills, and learn new ones....
But that last part might depend on how prone to motion sickness a person is.... :(

Your experience may vary....
I know mine would!

With clothing, the opposite of NOMEX is polypro (polypropylene cloth and fleece).

I did spin recovery training as part of my primary and during a couple flight reviews. Always enjoy doing a few spins.

Take those promised Avemco discounts with a grain (or ten) of salt. When I insured with them a few years back, they promised a 10% renewal discount for accident-free. When I got my renewal notice, it was for the same amount. When I called them up & questioned them on it, which most folks probably don't do, they said "uh.......oh, you got it but your rate went up 10% so the total is the same". Yeah, right. If you're gonna promise something, follow through on it.
I insured with someone else, I can't stand being lied to.

Re: Biannual Flight Review

Things have caught up with AVEMCO. THey have had such poor re-ups lately they have been rather aggressive with their pricing on the last cycle. So for my last cycle I ended up with them for the first time in over a decade. Do shop insurance, they are all trying a bit harder this year.

There is a couple of seaplane outfits in South Florida offering quick seaplane ratings. Really poor time of the year to go do it in Florida now, unless you need to shed a lot of water weight in a couple of hours in a piper cub on floats. Glider ratings are a hoot, 10 full stop landings with a 360° turn I believe still stands as the minimum for an already licensed pilot. I just wish I could get a Zepplin rating. Then do the airship hook engagement trick. That way I would have arrestments on the bottom and the top of an airplane. That would really be fun.

I have insured with AVEMCO for six years now. Every year, I've gotten either a 5 % or 10% discount for "good behaviour" on my part. And, EVERY one of those discounts has been entered AFTER I got a quote from them. They've never lied to me, and I'd be really surprised if they lied to you.

FWIW.

I have also received exceptional service and a discount from AVEMCO every year. =D>

Re: Biannual Flight Review

Some good ideas here.... What Ive been thinking about is doing my flight review up in bishop/mammoth area while im up there on vacation. I haven't done much flying up in the mountains, higher altitude airports, Owens valley, etc. So it would give me something new to add to my skill set for the price of the flight review.

Titus,

Excellent idea, and good on you for wanting to make this a real learning experience, instead of just doing the minimum to "fill that square".

Re: Biannual Flight Review

Back with AVEMCO this year after going to another last year. The other was not bad, just like AVEMCO better, talked to the actual insurance company, nice staff etc. Prices dropped this year over the cost that I had 3 years ago. I am happy.

I agree with MTV and the poster, make your BFI count, get some time doing things that you normally do not do when flying.

So your insurance premium now must be about half of what it was 6 years ago? Great.
I posted my experience with their "10% discount", maybe that counts as a lie in your book, maybe not. It does in mind. It will not prevent me from insuring with them again if they have the right number, but I will not again figure any promised future discounts into the equation like I did before.

Um, it shouldn't require a rocket scientist to understand what AVEMCO offers with their rewards program. They have never said or even suggested that they'll take 5 or10 % off the discounted rate you got from them LAST year. That WOULD be a great deal, and eventually they'd be paying you, right?

My rates with AVEMCO have remained the same for six years now. I like that as well. I used to insure with them when I lived in Alaska, including on floats, which most underwriters won't touch. When I started flight instructing in the plane, they apologized and let me know they wouldn't assume that risk, due to accident and claim history. They referred me to another broker and told me they'd welcome me back any time. As soon as I moved here, I called them, and rates and service have been exceptional.
