Big Problem Found in '56 172

Have problems with your aircraft? Maybe just questions about how best to tune or adjust something? Regs or maintenance? Need to know the best way to do something?

You just got to love some people who call themselves AP. Then there are the IA's who looked at this every year. Probably more than one guy too.

We all know the guy who will do your annual for $500.00 Does a real thorough job too. UH HUH yep you bet. You get what you pay for.

Good day

I beg to differ... It's something you should specifically be looking for on annual. On all your cables.

Bill you might want to check and see if all the pulleys are turning too. On the 175 they were all stuck and the cables would just slide across them. I think I'll take a peek inside the 175 as we had to rebuild the fuel valve too.

Lol commonly called a Bore Scope, Bill

Milwaukee Tools came out with one similar to 182STOL's unit. I've only looked at them, but seems to be a nice unit. Nice viewing area & uses the same rechargeable battery as their small drills & other tools. Not sure if it had a video output. IIRC it was about $250. I wouldn't do a HSI with it, but very handy & cheap for other inspection applications.

You do get what you pay for-- or you should get what you pay for. How long does it take to inspect a non-complex airplane like a C172 or similar?$500 covers about 10 hours of an independent mechanic's time at $50/hour. If the owner's done some of the stuff himself (greased wheel bearings, serviced brakes, checked compression, set timing, serviced plugs, etc), that seems like plenty of time for the inspection part of a C172 annual, assuming no squawks and that AD compliance & documentation have been kept up to date.
Now if you flog the airplane all year (ride it hard, put it up wet, and defer all squawks) and just drop it off at the FBO once a year, you can bet it's gnna be a lot more time & money to get it squared away. I have a friend that used to do this, and then wonder why the annual took 4-6 weeks & cost a few grand every time.

Avgas contains lead, it is a lubricant expressly put there to eliminate drag and reduce cable friction when sawing through fuel lines. The higher octane also from the lead inhibits low temperature ignition from sparks generated by the sawing action when jamming the rudder in crosswinds. Put some tire slime in the tank too to seal the leak.

Good catch Bill, welcome back to the land of the living.
