Down here atleast the UL 98HP engine is about 3 grand cheaper than a 80HP rotax 912. Having said that Im yet to find out just how reliable the UL engines are. There is nothing like sticking with the tried and proven!

Don't forget to consider the costs of ownership too. How long do you intent to run with this "interim solution"?
Some aircraft might cost more to buy, which means more waiting and saving. They might be cheaper to use though, if you can avoid CASA participation (microlight class 2?)
Others might be cheap to buy, but cost an arm + leg to run, and maintain if you are included in the full-blown CASA rigmoral.
I completely agree with you, there is a very big difference between purchasing a plane and owning a plane! this is why I hate the position I'm in, as Its like I'm hitting my head against the wall knowing what I need, and what the benefits are of going that extra step. However no matter what way I look at it, I still need that extra $$$ to make the extra step.
Whatever I look at will be registered in the RAA category so I can remain in hiding from casa. The second hand market over here is just packed Full of jabirus of which I would choose AIDS inplace of buying a Jabiru. one thing I am looking at seriously on the second hand market is the Savannah but I really do want to go tail drager if possible. But that seems to be about the only bush plane on the market over here that doesn't require the sale of majority of your limbs to purchase.
Though one thing I have just thought of is the shipping of aircraft from the states is whats killing off that option, though NZ is packed full of bush planes, might be worth some serious consideration. Can you recommend any good second hand aircraft sites for aircraft over there?
