We were in Anacortes the day they were messing with VG configurations for the 180/185 (we were there using a friend's 310 for the demo ship on them)....they put a row on the vertical and sent the guy out to fly...he made one short hop around the patch and asked that they be removed. He claimed it made the rudder so sensitive that it was really tough to control. Take that for what you paid...I wasn't paying any attention to him when he flew, so it could be just that pilot or something else? I haven't noticed them on straight tail 182's, but I do know they put them on the swept tails, and also they put them on the 310 vertical, and Chris said you could really feel the difference at low speed....

Another thing you might consider is a bit of weight on the tailpost. A couple pounds of lead hung on that post might make it a bit better to handle, with a small useful load consequence.
That should be a really fun airplane!!! Congrats!!!
