C-170 V-brace

Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

Re: C-170 V-brace

Reviving an old thread.
Does anyone have photos or details on how the center of the V is attached to the boot cowl?
Is it tied to the instrument panel?
Is there a beefy stiffener that goes in there?

I'm having a hard time visualizing where the loads go other than to flex the boot cowl.

Re: C-170 V-brace

Glacier nailed it. Don't overthink it too much. Bear in mind that this is just a stiffener, not structural. If the loads were to exceed the ability of the airframe in that area to withstand them, that v-brace is going to be the least of your worries.

My 170 did not have a v-brace when I got it. First winter on skis convinced me I needed one, lest my windshield pop out. Called Atlee and ordered one.

Mechanics put a small doubler under the panel for it so they'd feel better. :D

I couldn't believe how much difference it made in the movement of the windshield.

Re: C-170 V-brace

Sounds legit.

Since I have the boot cowl off, now is a pretty good time to install that doubler. I was planning on putting something extra up there if only to support a future bracket for who knows what. The old skin had about 19 holes in that area. I guess the guy couldn't make up his mind how to mount the compass

I'm getting sticker shock on that V-Brace tho. $650 smackers for 2 tubes, 2 brackets and 3 welds? Compared the the price for the IO-360 motor mount, that's cheap but still....damn.

Does anyone have enough photos and measurements that I could talk to my IA about an owner produced v-brace?

My 180 has a v-brace and it has a beefy looking doubler on it... I'll try to remember to get a picture some time.

Re: C-170 V-brace

Installation instructions for the Atlee Dodge v-brace say to use fender washers under the boot cowl.

I'm kinda thinking mine has a doubler under there but can't recall for sure.

Re: C-170 V-brace

Does anyone have an example field approval for the V-brace in a 170B?
