Re: C-180A Refurb project

I've had my MT for 6 and 1/2 years and so far it's holding up well. Been in a hangar that could get down to 20 below and up to 100 degrees. Definitely smoother.

Looks great Gunny! I love your panel. It is almost exactly how I want to do mine. Great looking plane, paint, and everything else! Congrats.

Just surfed both your resto & refurb photo albums.
I really enjoyed the before-and-after shots of the interior--
they really illustrate all the elbow grease you put into the airplane.
The end result was sure worth it-- it looks great!

I'm with hotrod, nice pictures. What did you do on the backside of the firewall for insulation?

Re: C-180A Refurb project

Looking awesome, all these 180 "utility" interiors are what have inspired my 170 project. Not going quite as deep with the entire interior painting. I do want to paint the 3 bulkheads back to the extended baggage and need to get the glue off. Not sure if I missed it but what products did you use to remove the glue and gunk? Other than elbow grease :D

lots of good advice here on the various threads... A quick search will NET various techniques and chemicals.

Re: C-180A Refurb project

Thanks ya'll. I used suggestions from MountainMatt and BigRenna... plus a lot of other stuff.... lots and lots of elbow grease. I haven't insulated the firewall. Not sure I'm going to. Noise is not a factor to me, besides being partly deaf, I use cep and headsets so its pretty quiet. I don't really fly in cold country, plus the cabin heat works VERY well.

More to come, prop gets here Friday.

The firewall was bare when I bought my 180, haven't really thought much about changing that. Metal is nice & bright, being bare makes it easy to monitor that & know that corrosion isn't becoming an issue. It's a 53 mode with stock dual exhaust which lets out right in front of & below the firewall, so maybe insulating it would quiet things down, but between being kinda deef (like Gunny) and using an ANR headset it's not really that big an issue for me.

Gunny,

What did you do for fuel gauges? Using the CGR-30p? Or that other gauge below it?

Re: C-180A Refurb project

The CGR-30P wasn't out when I started this odyssey. It will serve as a Fuel Gauge replacement. I suggest using that. What I used was the Aerospace Logic FL-202. It works great... just make sure you replace the fuel senders in both instances (I used McFarlane).

Nickel leading edge... comes as a standard option now by Flight Research. My neighbor says I'll be putting a ding in it real soon now, regardless of the claims of the hardness of the nickel. What a friend!

Re: C-180A Refurb project

The firewall insulation is also there for heat insulation in case of engine fire. The stainless firewall won't melt, but I suppose some protection for the crew and interior from the heat couldn't hurt in that extremely dire situation.

Looking good, Gunny!

Yeah, I've found that every guy who doesn't own an MT wants to tell me what's wrong with them.

Re: C-180A Refurb project

Man, that looks great. Talked to those guys a few months back about the 2 blade on my 185. From the specs and performance numbers it sounds like "the" prop for a guy who wants a fast cruise with a 520. I mainly want it for weight and vibration....I have only heard great things from guys with direct experience.

Keep us posted!!

And I have never heard a guy who spent $14,000 on a mod say he made a mistake.   Actually that goes for the $5,000 mods too.
