C172 panel upgrade

Over the last few weeks I did a motor swap and panel upgrade on a project 172. After I put a 100 hours on it or so I intend to sell. If $ was no issue I'd keep this plane. It runs so smooth and flys hands off. 9 hrs on it now. Fun project. Figured you guys may get a kick out of the panel change. The AV-30's are sweet. I had to have the Garmin 430 gone through. Spendy, but it's like new now. Very fast turn around from Garmin too. Century instruments went through the tach and the airspeed. They look like new now. Very reasonable rebuild pricing from them. I removed the vacuum system as well.

I included two AV30's in my panel upgrade as well, but not operational yet I'm still working on the 0-360 installation

Re: C172 panel upgrade

Nice 170 panel!

The clock, yeah, i figured it needed to stay? Can be changed out for something nicer in the future. I figured I had spent enough on the old 172 with the av-30's and garmin rebuild. Motor swap was an 0-300-D to an 0-300-C so I had to buy a skytec starter too. it got a little expensive. I didn't want to swap over the cable pull starter.

Re: C172 panel upgrade

I like the clock but I'm a resto-mod kind of guy, NO magenta lines. One of the leading reasons I went with the AV30's over any other similar instrument was for the "vintage" look display option it offers.

Re: C172 panel upgrade

After looking the install manual over closer. I had to put back a few more instruments. Oh well.

Re: C172 panel upgrade

You don't need the turn & skid the AV30 has one incorporated in it.

Interesting. The paperwork only says it can replace a slip/skid, not a turn and skid. It also does not have a mark on it for a rate one turn like a turn coordinator. If it's experimental then whatever, but for certified you would definitely need a turn and bank or turn coordinator still for some flight conditions (night, IFR, etc), at least that's how I read the installation manual...

Hold on a minute, I see a skid/slip indicator and it has roll indication at 10/20/30. :?

For VFR DAY and Night, the VSI and Turn Coordinator are not required. For IFR, the Turn Coordinator is, but VSI is not.

Unless the aircraft TC requires it, that is. In any case the AV-30 provides VSI. And maybe TC if acceptable.

In Canada, for VFR night and VFR OTT a turn coordinator is definitely required, as well as a VSI, pilot heat, and a OAT.

Still no rate one turn marking. The line on a turn coordinator shows 3* per second, not sure what roll indication that actually equates to, but it doesn't line up with any of the marks on the AV-30.

Re: C172 panel upgrade

Yeah, I thought this may be interesting to everyone. I was surprised I needed them. The AI and the local avionics shop seemed to think if the aircraft came from the factory with the rate of climb and turn coordinator as required equipment. they had to be put back in. The AV-30's seem to only be certified to replace the DG and Attitude indicator.

Re: C172 panel upgrade

I love the simplicity, my panel is crowded.

Personally airspeed and turn and bank would be the last things I took off my panel.

Avionics shops typically take the conservative view on these things.

So are those instruments are on a required equipment list for your airplane?

Re: C172 panel upgrade

Your new panel looks great! I really like the cleaned up look and I'm sure it helps your scan (once you get use to the new layout). Look forward to hearing more about your experience with the AV30s once you get back up in the air.

I have neither a DG or AI in my Pacer but I do have a T&B. I hope to remove the vacuum system and T&B next annual and have a single AV30 installed that I can toggle between DG and AI as needed. Might also ad a AV20 just because but I don't think I need two AV30s for my flying.

Cheers, Joseph

Re: C172 panel upgrade

Per my AI I had to re-install. I am not sure how much he dug into the original equipment list after talking with the local avionics shop and being told to put them back.

Thanks Joseph,

So far I have 16 hours on this setup. I like it. I am still working on getting the garmin 430 to communicate to the AV-30. The DG wanders like everyone complains about. I think once the 430 is hooked to the av-30 it will straighten that out. Uavionix need to get the fix sorted out on that for sure. All of your 6pack info is really in the one Attitude indicator AV-30. So I am not really scanning all the other instruments accept occasionally to confirm what the AV-30 is telling me. I really like it overall.
