CamTom12's Aerial Wanderings

Here's my very own thread like Evan.

Today I went flying on a big loop from Huntsville out east of Lake Guntersville, north into Tennessee, then just rode the border back west. I brought a friend along that I was stationed in Fairbanks with. He's moving soon and we hadn't been flying together in too long.

I only snagged two pictures over the lake and he got one during preflight. The rest of the time was spent talking about the scenery and catching up.

The route:

I see from your tracks at least, you've missed Houston County - M93. I'm not sure if its still there, but Southernaire is just across the road from where you can park - maybe 100 yds or so, for breakfast. First place I saw fried sweet rolls on the breakfast menu. Need I say more?

Nice pic's. I unloaded Wisconsin dairy cows at Falkville (just north of Cullman) a long time ago.

I'll check that out, thanks! I've been looking to find some more of the local treasures here. Our travel plans have kept us gone a lot lately though.

My buddy's dad just got some a month ago. I guess the auction screwed up big time though and it might be the beginning of the end for them. I think he said it was the longest running auction in the region.

I really need to get up there with the family one of these weekends. We'll get some aerial photos/video out the cargo doors from the 206. Glad to see you out exploring.

Re: CamTom12's Aerial Wanderings

Hey Cam. Great pics. I really dig the paint job and the plexiglass doors and panels.

Question on the plane....from the looks of it, your Pacer doesn't have a pilot's door like some that I have seen. I know that it sounds kinda silly, but is that a pain in the ass or no big deal? I guess it might just be one of those things that you get use to. Would like to hear your thoughts on that?

Having the rear pilots side door is probably pretty handy to stuff people and gear in.

Will do! I've got a bunch of old pics I haven't put up here yet. Some more that I'm saving for my AK to AL TR if I ever get around to putting some finishing touches on the text and then narrowing down the picture selection. Probably soon? Haha

If not up here, then somewhere in the middle! It'd be great to see you again!

It's actually not a big deal. The cockpit's small enough that I don't think it'd make much difference, though I've never flown one with the pilot's door to compare with. Yeah, the back door is key when flying 4-up or with just us and the dogs. It makes loading anything WAY easier!

That thing looks fast!

She would definitely look great with some big tires, however. (Don't they all)

Nice thread Cam!

These are going on soon. Just have to break them down to re-pack the bearings and then finalize how I'm going to lift the Racer:

That's a crazy-good paint job CamTom! If you can find a engine lift I'm a firm believer in the amsteel prusik hitch method. You can use the soft links from your tie downs. It won't hurt them one bit providing there are no sharp edges for them to get caught on. Just use an interface between the soft link eyes and the crane hook since they eyes are so small.

Re: CamTom12's Aerial Wanderings

I absolutely love my portable aluminum gantry cranes from Vestil Manufacturing. They weight about 350lbs (each) and disassemble pretty easy. They NET 2000LBS each. Quality is good too. I know a guy who is friends with Vestil and gets them for almost wholesale. I'm stoked.

JUNE-2015; I completely replaced every race/bearing on my WipAire wheels (made by Andy Grove, CA). (4) sets. One nice addition I purchased in Corvallis, OR from Harbor Frieght is a (12) ton press. Just add some homemade dies and the races drop out with ease. $195 + driving from KONP.

Thanks for the compliments! I love it too!
I think this is what I'm going to do. Seems safer than jacking from below with the potential of falling off the jack. Now to find a hoist.

I think those cranes are a little overkill for my needs - I don't have a float kit. Looks like they're perfect for fitting floats though!

I remember your press from your post-seawater fixes. That's a good idea, I'll have to get one of those.
