"I enjoy expanding my horizons and skills as a pilot. In Minneapolis I haven't been able to find a CFI that teaches light backcountry training. So I have been doing a lot of book learning. But that is all it is, theory and book knowledge; which only goes so far in the real world."

Todd:

You should give Brian Schanche at Adventure Seaplanes a call. He flies wheels, floats and skis. Some of his stuff is done in northern Minnesota. He keeps several floatplanes at Surfside - just North of the 'cities'.

Or, fly to Crookston and hire MTV! He *is* a master flight instructor, after all. ;-)

Another guy, but he may be harder to find, is Chris Napier. He hasn't any 'real' bush or back-country flying but he can strap on an airplane with the best of 'em.

Sorry. I don't have a clever sig yet.

So here is the theory part of it...

I have no problem running off my 2,700' 1,000'MSL grass strip at gross 2350# on a standard 29.92"hg 55.5f day. At 1,000'DA my engine is putting out 159hp for a power loading of 14.76#/hp

If I just put Shelly & I (380#), survival kit (15#), and 1.5hr fuel (90#) in our 1445# empty plane (1930# total weight) I need 130hp to get the 14.76#/hp power loading.

I get 130hp at 5,928'DA (-3.5%hp/1,000'DA)

Are you actually developing that much HP on takeoff? Do you have a FP or CS prop?

Good point. I am assuming you are refering to not getting red line rpms during takeoff ground run.

My prop gives me redline RPMs at full throttle at 6,000'DA. But what RPMs am I going to get standing still and the early ground run?

That is a hard one to answer because it really matters on the pitch of the prop. On one hand the air is thinner so more RPMs. But the engine has less power so less RPMs. Would it be about the same at 3,000'DA?

Just so all of you ID fliers know. I have no intention of flying out west this summer. I don't have the time for it right now. And the wife and I have plenty of places to explore in northern MN,WI,MI, and Canada flatlands for this year. I just want to keep learning. And flying "Real" backcountry is a good subject to study.

Coincidentally, the first page of the Idaho Aviation Association newsletter for July includes a story about a couple who flew a Mouseketeer into Thomas Creek back in 1964. http://www.flyidaho.org/newsletters/July%202007.pdf?menuID=48~48

This was to stay at a lodge on their honeymoon, so they probably didn't bring a lot of gear or in-laws in the back seats. :)

So I've been reading this thread for a day or so and my thought is:
If actual performance is in question, why not load the plane and take it up to an alt that is simular to the DA you'll likely find at JC? That way you'll have a real good idea of the climb rate and handling you can expect at JC.

You say you're going back to GTF at some point. If so head off to Schafer, Meadow Creek, Spotted Bear, Seeley Lake and Condon. They're all in the neighborhood and will be plenty of challenge.
