Does anyone know the status of the Fall River strip? It had Xs on it for a while. Last time I flew over it looked like the saplings on the east end of the runway are high enough to brush the underside of the wings.

Not sure. PM me sometime if you want to go check it out. I live near a bunch of volcanos too!

I drove out onto it about 2 years ago, and yeah, it's really becoming overgrown. Lots of saplings. The landable area is really shrinking, and there's a big rib/berm down the middle on the north end.

Would be good to drive out there with w 4x4 and a choker setup and pull some of those little trees, leave no stumps, fill in the hole. :)

I would be willing to use my 4x4 for some gardening at any of these cool strips this spring/summer! 8)

Re: Cascade Mnts., Oregon

From 2003-2007, I was in and out of there regularly. great trout fishing very close. The strip is quite long. The overgrown area limits it to about 2000 foot length. I Called the Fort Rock Ranger Station and asked about the status, they weren't even aware that there was a strip there. In 2009 there was lots of heavy equipment, and some big white X marks on the strip. Did a low flyby a month ago, but it was snowy. Equipment is definitely gone. Anybody know who manages this land? Sorry for going off topic.

Re: Cascade Mnts., Oregon

It is west/southwest of Sunriver by 5-6 miles, right next to Century Drive. It is labeled and clearly identifiable on google maps. There is a fish hatchery on the Fall river about 1/4 mile from the strip. About three miles up stream is the headwaters of the river where it burbles from the ground at about 300 cfs. The fall river has the clearest water I have ever seen. Jedi fly fishing skills required to succeed, unless you are nymphing at the hatchery. I know nothing regarding the history of this strip. Can't even remember who told me about it. I have been in a dozen times or more and never even been acknowledged as far as I know. It's not on Shortfield Explorer. I'll do some research and if it is open, I'll arrange a work party.

Re: Cascade Mnts., Oregon

I checked Google maps app and the strip is very clearly shown. ForeFlight has no record, nor AirNav?

This is getting exciting!

My Dad and I flew in there in his Kitfox 18 years ago right after he finished it. I always wondered where that strip was, and knew it was close to Sunriver, but that has to be it. I am in for a work party......

Fall River is on the April, 2004 Klamath Falls Sectional as U (Unverified). I don't have a newer chart. It is not on the 2001 chart. It is on National Forest land. It shows on my 1982 Deschutes National Forest recreation map but is not labeled.

The airstrip just faded away. Very cool to bring it back to life. Keep those charts, maps, etc! We may need them for proof that its there for us to park airplanes on to enjoy the place. :D

Re: Cascade Mnts., Oregon

It's in the Fort Rock Ranger District. I called them yesterday, and the guy I talked to knew nothing about it. It's probably ready to land on the west end. Let's meet up out there and formulate a plan. I can do Saturday the 9th of March.

That area can have quite a bit of snow for a while. I'll keep an eye on this thread!

I'd like to participate. I live in Bend and have a Bobcat to pull saplings, etc. if needed. My availability depends on some personal commitments with an elderly parent. Keep me in the loop.

Re: Cascade Mnts., Oregon

My guess is the airstrip lost maintenance resources and was "closed". I am not savvy on legal issues ( or many other issues ) but, is there a way to gently get support ( landing permission ) to use it to access the area? Is the Forest Service accessible to these ideas?

I burn more fuel and help clog up the roads driving there, small aircraft make sense! =D>

Re: Cascade Mnts., Oregon

There was heavy equipment there for a while. Not sure what was happening, but I'm guessing that it was related to whatever they were doing.
