With only 50 hrs on the 170, still lots to learn.

Great Video Larry and I appreciate your comparison. I think managing a trike in the backcountry is more challenging. Damn nosewheel and prop just get in the way. I just got back from a trip to Montana and Idaho in my friend's 182 - I kept checking the prop and nosewheel for dings at all of the strips we hit. He only has size 6 tires. Luckily - no damage anywhere but you definitely have to think and plan where you land and taxi much more so than in a tailwheel. He has C182P like yours with an O520. The performance was impressive. I do think a more fair comparison would be a 180 vs the 182. I would want to know which plane do you enjoy flying more ? I just love flying tailwheels. The option for a nice wheel landing is always nice to have.

That would be a great comparison, unfortunately all the C180 pilots I know wont take their planes off airport., so no 180 to compare to.

The stately and majestic 170 has an unbeatable advantage that the Mighty 182 can never overcome, a smoooooth round tail.

Me too. I am close Larry - we need to exchange rides one day. I think you'll have a good case of wagon envy after flying one. Best of both worlds. I do respect you abilities in the C182 - That damn nosewheel seriously scares me.

Seems like flying qualities of different airplanes can be compared even landing on airstrips.
Approach speed, landing speed, takeoff speed, & climb rate are what they are, whether at airstrip or gravel bar.
Ditto handling qualities.
I think maybe flying off-airport mainly compares gonad size.
