Chicken Strip Washout 2012

Latest update:
There is some minor water cutting at the top of the strip which could cause damage to nosedraggers, possibly tail draggers too. The strip is open but compromised. Land short and slow and it shouldn't be an issue. Don't and it probably will.

The park is, as of now, not allowing the caretaker to repair the damage. The reason given was liability.

I look forward to hearing from the RAF on how the park is treating the MOU.

thanks

Re: Chicken Strip Washout 2012

Update as of 4:00PM today, Tusday 8-21-12

An aviation enthusiast landed at the Chicken Strip this morning in a Citabria and it is definitely “rough”. :( He just happened to have a shovel and rake with him :D , so he and a helper smoothed out the rough edges. The wash outs were not too bad but they did create a dip or two which gave the landing and take-off a whoop-dee-doo effect. He felt any bush plane would be OK but nose draggers should be careful and experienced.

It’s my intent to get with the NPS and have a maintenance crew in AS SOON as it can be set up. As the RAF has an updated maintenance agreement with the NPS now, I do not expect any delays this time.

I will post any other updates or information here to keep everyone informed and troll for volunteers when we get a date to do the maintenance required.

Rick

Re: Chicken Strip Washout 2012

Being in the SEUS and temporarily grounded, I'm flying vicariously through you guys out west. Every time a thread pops up about these little backcountry strips, I spend time on google and skyvector daydreaming. This time I ran across this video of the Chicken Strip and Hot Springs. Maybe old news here, but I enjoyed it.

Saw this comment posted on the website provided in the post above.

Posted yesterday:
Strip was dragged over Labor Day weekend and is in good shape now. NPS morning report lists it as open again.

Well done Rick and folks! Many thanks for your time and effort.
