Colorado to California in the SNOW and a New Plane

A BUSH PLANE IN DISGUISE

The new toy. That's Arts office for Rocky Mountain AG just above the nose, what a great couch. :D

Colorado in February at 13,500ft.

Well the big snow storm in Colorado didn’t get me and that’s a good omen. You see, I sold my Zenith 701 to a friend so he could cross off another item on his bucket list. Then I noticed I had nothing to fly, big problem. So I started looking for a really good deal and I think I found one. I like Pacers and have a lot of good stuff for them (you know the things your wife calls JUNK). So I went looking for a Pacer. They are a good buy but I was looking to steal something, so no luck in the Pacer department. But The TriPacer opportunities are everywhere. I found a very clean 1957 PA-22-160 with 1943hr on it, all original. No one has messed with it. It even had a Loran in it. Anybody want a good deal on a Loran? I made the deal and let’s just say I stole it including a fresh annual.

So with a big storm coming to the Denver area and the plane in Colorado Springs I got on a commercial flight with my pockets full of hundred dollar bill. 8) Made the deal on Wednesday the 1st and got ready to depart on Thursday morning at dawn. Well I only got a 150 miles and the ceiling went to the ground with snow. So I parked it in the little town of Monte Vista Colorado “KMVI”. You know, I had never landed a TriPacer in snow before, what fun. So with the visibility down to less than 300FT and me being from California the FBO owner Art Jones of Rocky Mountain AG must of felt sorry for me and let me sleep on the office couch for the next two days. Can’t say enough about his hospitality. He let me use his pet truck “Thumper” to go to town and gave me the run of the place. He even had an open hanger and let me put my new toy out of the weather for the two days I was there. If any of you guys go that way stop at his place to buy gas, he’s the best. Don’t stop at Alamosa 12-miles south go to Monte Vista and say hi to Art. His gas prices are better than Alamosa anyway.

After two days on the sofa the clouds lifted enough for me to get going. So I took it to 13,500 to get out of the valley and on my way to Gallup New Mexico. Then on to Lake Havasu Arizona “KHII” for fuel and lunch. If you’re down that way the FBO is great, fuel prices are very good and Waldo’s restaurant is wonderful. The last leg on in to Kern Valley Airport was normal.

Now the work begins, Tail wheel, Wing tips, vortex generators, bush wheels, etc.

What a great Trip.

Russ your suppose to be working, not playing on BCP in the middle of the day like me.

I’ve started building the gear already and should have them and the toe brake pedals done in a couple of weeks. The actual installation should not take more then a week as slow as I work. I have all the parts just need the time.

Very nice. Especially so since we just finished a several page discussion on Tri Pacers. Congratulations. Way to go. Good on you, dude. My only reservation is that I didn't get a ride in the 701 first. But then again, I didn't show for the chicken strip project so it serves me right!

Rides are still available in the 701, Paul the guy I sold it to is based here at Kern Valley "L05" and I'm helping him get his Sports Pilot license. So come on by or we will see you at the chicken strip some day.

Nice looking plane, Mr Rick. If I can squeeze into that 701, I'd like to take up your offer for a ride.

Thanks again for sharing your trip report.
