Community Call To Action - Wolf Herold

Hey folks.

I've a favor to ask to the community with respect to my good friend Wolf Herold...

I know some of you were following along with Wolf on his adventure where he chased his boyhood dream of buying/owning/and exploring the US in a Cessna 170B and are very familiar with his story.

If your not, about six years ago Wolf reached out to me in hopes of finding a nice 170B, which set the two of us together on a long journey, on which eventually we built a really nice Super 170.

Due the fact that he lived in Europe, as well as his age, he eventually, and begrudgingly came to the conclusion that it was time to pass his pride and joy (he called it "Whisky Blue,) on to a new owner. He had it listed, changed his mind, listed it again, changed is mind yet again, and finally, just after the new year, listed it once more for sale.

This last January, the stars aligned, and the Cessna went to a new home, and Wolf found himself free of the painful decision of keeping or selling his bird... we even began talks about downsizing into a simple J3 to possibly have a low-and-slow adventure with this summer.

Unfortunately, in Feb, not a month after he sold his bird, Wolf suffered a serious medical issue and is now currently in hospital undergoing rehabilitation. He is in good sprits, and hopefully can recover, but he has quite a bit of hard work ahead.

I was able speak to him on the phone this AM for the first time, and he wanted me to let any folks that where trying to get a hold of him know that he is feeling ok, but that he'll be out of pocket for a bit. He's been moved from Spain to Switzerland and is having a hard time with his electronics, getting logged into eMail, whatsAp, Signal, Facebook, BCP, etc...

At any rate, Wolf is one of the sweetest guys, and loved sharing his adventures with the BCP community. If you followed him at all, or enjoyed any of his travels/posts, I thought we could return the favor with a get well.

Here's my ask... Seeing he is on his onesies with no immediate family close to him, and no access to electronic communication, I was hoping that folks might reach out and sent him a quick hand written note. If your feeling ambitious, maybe a book on flying, or any other small aviation related token to let him know we're pulling for him. I think if we send stuff out this week, he will still be at the facility by the time it gets to him in Switzerland... hopefully in the next week or so, he might be able to get back on social media and chime in himself.

Anyway, if you have a free moment and can afford a stamp, you can send him a get well at:

Rehabilitation Clinic Bad Zurzach
Attn: Wolf Dietrich Herold
Quellenstrasse 34
5330 Bad Zurzach, Switzerland

He will be there at least another two weeks.

Huge thanks,

Greg-

And in an ironic twist, here is one of his last videos he posted titled "Will my flying go into hibernation."

Re: Community Call To Action - Wolf Herold

Two weeks may not be enough time for a letter to get to him, but I'll write and send a note today. Our paths never crossed, but I did enjoy reading his posts and share his love of the backcountry flying community. Hopefully, getting a note from a stranger won't make him wonder if he really does know me and has just forgotten my name. I'll try to explain my connection to him though BCP.org and hope that is sufficient. It's a really good thing he had his big backcountry adventure before his health issue popped up.

Ahh damn, that sucks. I feel so bad for Wolf.

Receiving letters in the snail mail is a lost experience these days but it’s always satisfying. I’ll get something out to him.

I’m in France. I’ll send him a postcard today.

[quote="Flyhound"]...but I'll write and send a note today./quote]

I spoke to Wolf today. He's in good spirits, but fighting the good fight.

He got Flyhound's note and was so appreciative. His brother was also able to visit and told him we were talking about him on Social Media.
Poor guy is stuck in isolation now due to some sort of bug he picked up in Hospital. Gonna be a long haul for him, so fingers crossed he'll be able to get back on his own.

Again, support and get well wishes would go a long long way.

Thanks guys!

Holy smokes, that was fast. Did he sent it via quantum tunnel?

Well after all... he did spend his career as a physicist! LOL

Worked with Wolf today over the phone to try to get him able to use his computer for eMail and social media today. Hopefully we will see him pop up in the next few days. That said, it's looking like he's in rehab till at least April 4th, so if anyone still wants to reach out with a letter, the support will go a long way.

Thanks to those that have reached out to me personally about Wolf, and thanks to those that have already sent a note.

Re: Community Call To Action - Wolf Herold

HEY community, I'm still IT/comm-handicapped/FRUSTRATED, but just now a channel to bcp.org miraculously became available, so I'm jumping at the opportunity.... I have once again realized, and this time in a rather strange situation, what it feels like to be a member of this community. Thanks to everyone who sent notes, cards and wishes. First to Greg aka Bigrenna for getting the ball rolling and then to everyone who kept it going. All your notes and greetings have revealed a completely new (to me) quality and impact of bcp as a forum and as a community: its effectiveness as a rehab motivator/facilitator! Nothing is more “pushy” to force me to go to the gym or to another therapeutic session than a trip report or the announcement of a bcp-related event! Do I see the light at the end of the tunnel?Yes I did, and it looked like the Quasar LED tip wigwag LOL!

Wolf,

Also glad to see you are able to at lest post and keep in touch with the fellow pilots around the country that know you mainly via your videos and post. I'm another one that has not met you personally but that doesn't mean we can't call each other friend and wish you well.
Take care and know many of us are thinking about you.

Good to see you are back on the forum. Health hiccups suck, I have had both minor and major. Keep at it both mentally & physically and good things will come.

Re: Community Call To Action - Wolf Herold

Looks like Wolf has busted out of rehab and is (hopefully) by now back to his home in La Cerdanya Spain. I think he's still trying to navigate his computer and iPhone, but hopefully he will pop up soon enough!
