Re: Cubs

Nice..... but at 2:47 there is a shot of the pilot hand propping it, counter clock wise. I could swear that I propped my T-Craft from the left side, behind, so clock wise rotation, right?! We all know the Rotax 912 turns "backwards", CCW. Am I all wrong here or is that video goofy? Or, is that another engine that turns CCW, used in a Cub? WTF?

Re: Cubs

Looks correct to me. When I have had to hand prop alone I have done it the same way as this guy, but then I was on floats. If you look at the props pitch, you can see it has to turn that direction. Clockwise looking from the rear. Maybe you are thinking of the Rotax turning the 'other' direction.

Re: Cubs

It's right. I prefer to prop with one hand on the back of the blade and one on the door opening. 8)

If your behind your prop on the left side, pulling down to start, wouldn't that make it CCW? On my C150, C180, and Citabria all would require you standing on the right side to prop them.

Re: Cubs

Thanks for posting this BRD - great video!

Not sure what you guys are talking about on the hand propping at 2:47 - he is standing on the right side of the nose, behind the prop and hanging onto the front of the door opening with his left hand. The prop turns clockwise (from cockpit view). ??? Same thing I did when I flew one. You might want to take another look...

Re: Cubs

Only engines I know of that turn backwards are the russian radials. Even the Rotax turns the same direction- clockwise as viewed from the cockpit. Better get a heavier left foot if you decide to run your engine backwards.

weird.... when I fly a backwards turning engine (-10 Garret powered Thrush for example), I *think* I'm leaning on the right foot on take off... although to be completely honest, I never go into these things pre-programmed... I just give the airplane what it wants

As for the 2:47 thing, I think courier just had a dyslexic moment.... like Mike, I prop my cub from behind and prop it from that exact location... when I prop my Taylorcraft I do it from the front, (mostly because I want to set a good example for our son and don't want him propping with a door behind him) but it is from the same side... I think propping either from the other side would require some amazing gymnastics

and yes... thank you for the great link!

Take care, Rob

Re: Cubs

My Rotax two stroke gear drive prop rotates left hand. The nose turns right when the throttle is pushed in, when the tail comes up the nose turns right again, on climb out the nose wants to turn right. Left pedal required but I never had to think about it when transitioning from being a Cherokee pilot.

Doh!!!... what a bonehead I am sometimes #-o Of course it's left pedal, this stuff isn't aircraft specific, it's simple physics... opposite turning prop, opposite direction effects.... it musta just my turn to have a dyslexic moment ](*,) #-o

Re: Cubs

Rob,

You are correct that if we are dynamic and proactive with the pedals, we will make the correct p-factor correction. Also gyroscopic precession, when we bring the tail up.

Also torque in a helicopter where we use left pedal for added power. Russian helicopters are backwards here which would make Russian helicopters respond like U.S. airplanes, right?

As the Sundance Kid said to the old miner, "I'm better when I move."

Good to hear from you,

Jim
