Re: DC-3 emergency landing after engine failure

Those guys earned their pay that day. And FWIW, it’s a C-117/R-4D actually, sometimes called a “Super DC-3”.

When you consider the wingspan of that thing, keeping it on that runway without massive chaos was indicative of superb airmanship. Watch the videos…..they were doing everything they could to keep it in the air long enough to make the runway. Clipped one tree….

Dang!

I'm betting the "gear up" call was a wise one, the drag would have been a game changer I'm thinking.

Why did he request left turns?

I'm guessing the LH engine is the one that failed--
easier to turn into the dead engine, and maybe impossible to turn away from it?

Re: DC-3 emergency landing after engine failure

It was the right engine and it would not feather hence the severe drag

He sounded like a boss on the radio. Nice flying.

Not a good practice to turn into the dead engine. Cheated death again!

Re: DC-3 emergency landing after engine failure

Latest info looks like the right prop did feather

This is true but the only way for him to have made the runway was to make a right turn.

Re: DC-3 emergency landing after engine failure

Never flown a DC-3 but the single engine performance looks really anemic here. Sea level and fairly cold day. I assume this airplane was loaded at MGTOW. Captain stayed cool throughout and did a great job. I couldn't believe how close he got to the GA planes. Lots of great camera angles on this one.

The “good” engine may not have been producing 100 percent power.

This is what I’ve been thinking, that thing should have made it around the circuit with room to spare. Let’s hope they weren’t over MGTOW.

Re: DC-3 emergency landing after engine failure

Or maybe they where not able to feather the prop on the "caged" engine, that's some serious drag.

Re: DC-3 emergency landing after engine failure

If you look carefully while it’s in flight, that right prop is turning, but slowly.

A friend told me last night that two of the three blades on that prop went into feather, but the third blade was still fine pitch. I can’t see that, but that may have caused enough drag.

That's what I swear I saw in one picture....2 blades feathered and one still in fine. That'd really suck!!! Glad they did their job well and came home after!!!

Re: DC-3 emergency landing after engine failure

You have to do it some times.

My worst engine failure on take off was on a CV 440, it included a fire.
Turn had to be left over the failed engine, period. Saved the day.

Not yet familiar with this case.
