Death Valley Maintenance Day, Dec-15-2012

The National Park Service has approved Saturday, December 15th 2012 for Maintenance at both Furnace Creek and Stove Pipe Wells. :D The maintenance needed is light. All the Tie-Down cables at both strips need tightened and some additional cable clamps are needed. Anyone looking for a reason to see the Death Valley when it’s not 120-degrees is invited. Temperatures are expected to be in the 70 to 80 range unless a storm moves in. If you plan on camping for the weekend expect the nights to be in the 30 to 40 range. There is camping at both Furnace Creek and Stove Pipe wells. In addition there is the Chicken Strip only about 30-min away for camping and Hot Tubs.

This is a FLY-IN event. :D Anyone that can come out to help please e-mail me or call as I need to get a list of volunteers to the NPS. Any questions as to the work needed or the facilities feel to call or e-mail.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Unbelievable pictures, and am I glad you posted them. I have approval to get the existing cable system improved by tightening them up and adding more cable clamps, that’s what we will be doing on the 15th. I’m also trying to get the park service to upgrade the tie-down system. These pictures will help a lot with the new park Superintendent and Chief Ranger who have just come on board and have no idea how bad things can get or what has happened in the past.

Thanks a lot for the information and pictures. I’ll let you know if I get anywhere on the improvements.

The old Chief Ranger was Brent Pennington, a good guy. The new Chief Ranger is Karen McKinlay-Jones, been on staff a little over a month. She is still getting her bearings but is very open to working with Aviation and wants to a good job for us. :D The government regulations are very cumbersome and that adds a lot of extra work. :?

I'm off that weekend. Not planning on anything as of yet. Let me know if anything needs to be driven in to assist.

Rick let me know if there are any volunteers from this end that might be going. Still have the rake that had the broken handle needs to go back up to the Chicken Strip.

I'll be there in spirit. 5 hours each way is to much. Not to mention our bad wx here in the NW.

Cheers...Rob
