Years ago I saw one of these around sunset from Santa Ynez, CA. I think it turned out to be a Patriot, but it was truly a spectacular sight. I just hope I never a gaggle of them.

years ago I had occasion to work on San Clemente Island for one week doing a job on some of the barracks... while I was there I saw all sorts of military goings on.. and one evening when I was done working I was sitting watching the ocean and here comes a frigate, Not the bird, full speed towards shore... about a mile out he turns hard to starboard, and comes parallel with shore... Then fires off a missile straight up and it disappeared into the low clouds... have no idea where it went or where it came down...but I did wonder if he was firing at us for a few minutes... This one, apparently , was fired north of Catalina Island yesterday...and like so many stories of this type I would bet dollars to donuts it will just die and go away and never be mentioned again ... and the navy will probably claim they had no idea where it came from or who fired it... In fact they'll probably say we didn't see what we saw... or it was a "weather Balloon"...

That is cus we quit making them in the 60's. Not too quiet when the diesels are running. You cannot make it from china to so cal on the battery. Three kts for a day then fire up the diesels to recharge. Think these boats were made for short range. Or they could have the energizer bunny Endurance: 45 day; 6,000 miles with snorkel @7 knots; or 400 miles submerged @3 knots

I yield to your 500X greater knowledge on this subject... if they had to run the diesels for most of the way then wouldn't we have heard them coming for at least long enough to figure out what they were up to? Also, "quiet" or not wouldn't their boats still be seen by flying/floating magnetic anomaly equipment?
