I think it's a sign of the times. Folks are very pissed off at what the government is doing.

This may very well be another example of the government lying to us. #-o

This doesent hold water. Take another look at the photo, the so called contrial is in front of the distaint island not behind it. Its starts at around water level between the two islands.

I vote for jet contrails. Here are a few shots taken by a friend of mine in Colorado:

They look pretty similar to me.

OK, all you airline guys- 75 degrees is a pretty standard departure angle for a passenger jet from the middle of the ocean, right?

If it was an airliner, it would be on an IFR flight plan, and tracked by radar. The authorities could easily identify the flight path and knowing the location of the camera could verify the photo as being from a known flight. If they did all this, why wouldn't they state more detail to support their statement? Especially when the first photo posted above by "amacbean" looks a lot like the photos taken of the mystery contrail. I don't know what the real answer is, but our "authorities" don't look so smart to me.

Amazing when something that looks like a contrail is spotted in the sky.
The first thing that crosses relatively normal peoples brain is the least likely thing it might be. UFO's, Missiles' and some black ops project.

Haha! Apparently there aren't a lot of South Park fans on here. Of course, it is only by coincidence that I saw that episode a few weeks ago.

Tom is absolutely right. "It was an airliner contrail" does not cut it. We need to know which airliner, at what altitude, on what course, etc, etc, plus some detailed analysis of how that specific airliner could have created that specific contrail. All that should have taken about a half hour to figure out, but it didn't - in fact we still don't have that.

No matter what this thing was, this whole episode has been a complete and utter fiasco for the military, the FAA and even the media. Are there any grownups left in positions of authority anymore?

As far as the entertainment business (which includes the news media), I can vouch that the answer is no.
