Douglas Lumgair, SMFT Instructor Extroidinar

Having flown with Doug last weekend, I can highly recommend him to teach safe maneuvering flight techniques. His mastery of both the flying of and teaching CFOT the low ground effect takeoff, Dutch rolls, energy management turns, and the apparent brisk walk rate of closure approach convinced me he had studied "Stick and Rudder," "Contact Flying, " and "Safe Maneuvering Flight Techniques" extensively. He is an excellent pilot and instructor.

I hope to get feedback on this thread about how many of you are improving your safe maneuvering flight techniques by flying with Doug.

Thanks again Doug. You made my heart proud.

Wow... Jim... extraordinaire and mastery?
I have very much enjoyed studying your techniques and flying with you. It really brought things into context for me, but you are the one that is extraordinary. I have just gotten myself in a place where I really feel like I can begin practicing your maneuvers. If someone wants to fly with me, that's great, I'm sure I would continue to learn more about your maneuvers in the process of sharing them with others.
Thanks, Doug

+1 for Blackwater, he flies that airplane like a fine violin. Learned a lot from these guys in a short time.

Agree, Doug is beyond extraordinair flight Instructor. I remember him when he was ferrying barnacles from Ensenada to LAX using a Beach18... Doug was instrumental in getting me certified to fly a complex high performance C-195 (N120BW) that was STC'd with IO470 260HP engine out of Brown Field in San Diego back in the 90's. I am looking to connect with him again to get current on my Taildragger work. Plan to purchase PA20-Pacer and I need his help in getting proficient flying it...

I'd like to hear more about that airplane.

CFOT can back me up on this. I flew with Doug and talked him through the techniques, which he performed perfectly. I don't know about the rest of you instructors, but it makes me feel very proud when a student does better than I have demonstrated. With Doug, I didn't even have to demonstrate and embarrass myself. 25 hours a week on the pipeline kept me tuned up even when a student was doing most of the flying. As instructors we should not be hogging the controls enough to maintain proficiency. Yet out voices work as good as always, even if we talk like we have marbles in our mouth.

The thing I worry about with Doug is how quiet and dignified he is, even on this forum. Many instructors are loud and obnoxious like me.

Re: Douglas Lumgair, SMFT Instructor Extroidinar

To add to the complexity to this 195, before we got the plane someone started a float mode by adding 2 additional fins at the tip of the horizontal stabilizer and stopped! which made it a challenge to keep the nose straight on the centerline during a cross wind landing...
Another thing was done after the engine STC with shorter prop, they decided to lower the main LG to improve visibility (which was non existent with the radial) during Taxiing and that caused another issue during flair with the ground affect especially during a 3 point landing...The solution was to always wheel land it like a T6 whenever you have sufficient runway...bottom line it was challenging and unique and lots of fun to fly...
Again thanks to Doug (If he is the same Doug out of San Diego) that helped us master the wheel landing techniques in this beautiful airplane..you can google N120BW and see more pics of the plane...Enjoy & happy Easter everyone...

Was that same airplane tied down at KSEE (Gillespie Field) for many years? It was painful to look at. Where is it now?

I did google it up-- although a 195 looks weird without the round engine,
they did a very good job blending the new cowl into the fuselage,
I kinda wonder what the point of the airplane was--
the IO470 is less hp (260) than the 300 Jake standard on the 195.
Why not just get a 185?
Although it's shaped differently, the 195 wing uses the same airfoil (NACA 2412).

FWIW N120BW has been de-registered, and it doesn't seem to have been re-registered using a different tail number.
So probably abandoned somewhere or scrapped out.
