Good thing about a cooold winter and slow spring is that the Alaska state bird (mosquito) is not out yet. BTW it snowed in Unalakleet yesterday, winter isn't quite through.

The reason he must have turned to you and asked if you had it off is because when they are sending or receiving a message or trying to locate service it can make an really annoying sound in the headsets! When flying on the C-17 we always knew when a crewmember or passenger had a cell phone on because of the interference it caused in the communications. It can be very loud and distracting. There ya go!
The bottom line is the FAA has banned electric devices because you can not prove that they will NOT cause interference. saying it didn't cause interference today is NOT proof that it will not interfere tomorrow.
