Jason from Surefly came back up to Durango this May with a unit that had been re-designed to deal with a voltage spike that seems to exist in my system. He installed it and tested it and it all runs perfectly now. Its been in for 2 months and 30 hours and so far so good!

Re: Electronic ignition

Different engine and plane, but I have been running a Surefly SIM on my O-360 for over two years now. I initially had it set up to use the advance timing but I was also in Colorado and as soon as the warmer weather rolled around, I found the timing advance was pretty bad for takeoff and climb performance. Unless they have updated something, Surefly's advance schedule calls for max advance of 38 degrees when MAP is below 21" regardless of engine RPM. For me, that was every summer time takeoff due to the high DA out there in Colorado and I noticed a dramatic increase in CHT and decrease in power. I talked to Surefly and they had me check a few things but I ended up switching back to fixed timing and the plane performed much better. Now that I am in the North East I haven't switched it back to advanced timing because I usually fly low altitude and not lean of peak. The unit never needs the timing adjusted and seems to be working fine, so I really can't complain about it. I have one Slick with an impulse coupling so I could in theory hand prop a dead battery. The only weird thing with the Surefly is you get a weird stumble to the engine when you go from the Slick to the Surefly on the mag check because there is a slight delay in the unit powering up. Over all I have been happy with it.
