And the video doesn't do it justice.

Of this, I am certain. Cameras and microphones can enhance sights and sounds to embellish on one level, but can never really capture an experience.

Saw a herd like that west of Anaktuvuk Pass once in the 70's. As far as I could see. Flew back to Bettles to take lodge crew up to see them. Hour and half later when we got back to where they were around Chandler lake They were gone

Keep the shiney side up and the dirty side down...

Re: Enormous Caribou Herd From the Air

Watched the Porcupine herd crossing the Porcupine River once from the air.....impressive. I've flown over the Western Arctic Herd and the Porcupine Herd both several times. Closest thing to the Serengeti in the Americas.

Nothing to get excited about. Nothing to see here folks. Just move on, move on. Just a few Backcountry Caribou heading to JC for the weekend.

Re: Enormous Caribou Herd From the Air

Nice video. As large as this herd is, it is now less than half of what it was in 2003. The herd fluctuates in size from year to year. It is estimated that there were only about 75,000 animals in the herd in 1979. It is hard to spot individual Caribou from the air, but not when they are herded up during migration -- or hanging out on a snow field while trying to keep the bugs away.

It all looks good, "from a distance".

Re: Enormous Caribou Herd From the Air

I too loved to see that. In my experience, all from the ground, where there are caribou gathered you'll find wolves too. I looked as best I could and didn't see any in the vid. I think they are there though. Odd thing about caribou compared to deer, elk, or antelope is that they don't display much fear of humans. Maybe that's only on the North Slope where they don't see many but for now, I've concluded that they're just not very bright. Or maybe they don't mind death because it gets them away from the mosquitos.

This caribou looks like it had the opportunity to escape when it got across the river, but made the not so bright choice of standing its ground.

Powerful animals!

Agreed. The sow wouldn't have chased very far leaving her cubs on the river bank.

Big score for the bear family!

Moose aren't very impressive either if measuring intelligence.

Yeah, I think they're cut from similar bolts of cloth. One time a moose and our dog got into a Mexican standoff (is that PC?) in our back yard in Anchorage. It looked a lot like the back-and-forth of the bear and caribou video. Fortunately for one of them (probably our dog, though the moose was weakened by the winter, so maybe not), I intervened and got her back in the house before anyone got hurt.

Often enough, moose will take on the traffic on the roads and highways around Anchorage, and occasionally stand their ground against the Alaska Railway. Actually, moose sausage tastes pretty good! :)
