First Hand Experience w VG's and Robertson STOL

Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

ABSOLUTELY NOT TRUE! This is on of the biggest misconceptions about the tail wheel lock and it just isn't true. I wouldn't own a 185 without one and I've installed one on a bunch of skywagons. I don't understand the aversion to something that helps keep your tail wheel aircraft pointed straight....

I was there at the tail, I saw less rudder deflection when the t/w lock was engaged.
Maybe he just needs to put more boot into it, I don't know, but I saw what I saw.

Is it not appropriate in this thread to discuss tangential solutions, like aileron gap seals, that might potentially assist with improving the roll rate on the R/STOL equipped 185?

He stated that his 185 is equipped with a Sportsman STOL cuff, which kit includes aileron gap seals, and yes, they do help some.

........

I understand VG's will help the roll rate, but will it be as good as stock? That is my question. Will VG's give the Robertson wing as effective ailerons as stock? Sorry MTV, I have considered disconnecting it.

I have a 185 with the Roberson STOL and Micro VGs. You will not get the roll rate of a stock wing with the addition of VGs. I have landed with no flaps in really gusty conditions where stop to stop control was necessary. In this case, the Robertson wing performs just as good as a stock wing. I have also landed with 1 notch of flaps which allows a slower approach with nearly full aileron control.

A strong crosswind won't bother a Robertson, but gusty crosswinds will. Just use no or 1 notch of flaps. You will be able to land and takeoff shorter in regular wind conditions but not necessarily when the wind gets ugly which will require a slightly longer runway and higher landing speeds due to less flaps.

I love the options that the Robertson provides. But knowing how to use the rudder and how to land with various flap positions is important. Don't think that VGs will "get the ailerons back". I fly on wheels mostly in case it is important to know that.
