Sounds like a song I know.

"I fly alone...yeahah with nobody else. Ya know when I fly alone...I prefer to be by myself!"

I'm not sure.

Wow, this guy scorched the grass! I used to work with the Argentinian AF, and they are very proud of this airplane...

Re: Flying low

That video of the B-17 made me think of the scene in Catch 22 where just the guy's legs are left standing after a low pass on the beach.

Yossarian would have something great to say about this whole thread. :D I wonder if that could ever catch on......... WWYS. (What would Yossarian say)

If the "world's most tested athlete" can sell millions of Livestrong bracelets to promote blood doping, then surely Yossarian could sell a few. ???

L19:

Would like to hear more about your Baja 1000 experiences. Have always wanted to build a VW and try that race out.

Looks like a hoot.

Were you there as an official spotter or were you just overflying the festivities?

Thanks, Larry

Cruised like this for over 80 miles across Nevada on our way home from Johnson Creek this year. Gotta watch out for birds coming up out of the brush though! That hour went by really fast to say the least!

Re: Flying low

I used to fly real low and enjoyed seeing the wildlife, then I started to think about it.
My Champ is much slower, more maneuverable, and has a lot better visability. Birds have time to get out of the way. Stall speed before an unplanned "landing" is in the low forties. Is this really something you want to do in a faster, cross country plane?

Re: Flying low

I dont do it all the time, and only over deserted beaches, there the problem might be birds though so need to watch closely.
My 182 stalls at about 40mph IAS even a bit less, so is not that fast.
Im afraid to fly low over land. towers, cables, crop dusters.
minimum I do is 500ft AGL

Not so deserted. At 6:40 you flew over 4 people. Not trying to rain on a parade, but I'd be hesitant to post video of me busting a reg on the Internet.

§ 91.119   Minimum safe altitudes: General.

Except when necessary for takeoff or landing, no person may operate an aircraft below the following altitudes:

(a) Anywhere. An altitude allowing, if a power unit fails, an emergency landing without undue hazard to persons or property on the surface.

(b) Over congested areas. Over any congested area of a city, town, or settlement, or over any open air assembly of persons, an altitude of 1,000 feet above the highest obstacle within a horizontal radius of 2,000 feet of the aircraft.

(c) Over other than congested areas. An altitude of 500 feet above the surface, except over open water or sparsely populated areas. In those cases, the aircraft may not be operated closer than 500 feet to any person, vessel, vehicle, or structure.

Debate on should or shouldn't aside, he is legal (under US Regs) as long as he is 500 or more away (and he reports he fly's no lower than 500). This is Costa Rica as well, do they have similar Reg's in place? Maybe they could even be more stringent than in the US?

Re: Flying low

Didn't realize it was Costa Rica. I too have NO idea what the rules are there.

But I'd imagine the video alone would be pretty persuasive evidence of being below 500' regardless of what the pilot "reported". Video evidence is hard to argue with. Anybody with any experience flying knows that was way less than 500' at the 6:40 mark.

I have always thought that the 500' AGL can be confusing, because of the last part above. It indicates NO minimum altitude but a distance requirement. Now, the argument about what constitutes sparsely populated vs congested areas will determin what altitude you need to be at.

Just my thoughts....

Not to be a smart ass..... but "COSTA RICA" is in the title of the video... and listed as his location right under his name. Don't let everyone bust your balls motoadve, especially when they don't know the local regs. Keep on doing what you're doing and have fun.
