Re: Flying Wild Alaska

Prolly another concession to the non-flying public that watches the show. No one would believe an engine swap could cost $50K--in fact, they probably think $20K is a lie. Heck, my O-360 was $23K!

G's description of the Alaska nights sure brings back memories. I recall one night at the Willow Winter Carnival, probably in January 71, where the clamor in the motorhome just got to be too much, so I went for a walk. Temp was about -25F, and the Northern Lights were absolutely gorgeous. I went back to the motorhome to try to get Wife 1 to come look, but she was too busy corralling the kids, or so she said--I think she didn't want to go out in the cold! That was the first time I'd seen the lights, and it's a pretty indelible memory, even 41 years later.

The cold was pretty indelible too--not sure I could take it now. But I'd love to go back for a visit in the summer--thinking seriously about flying my LRB up there come summer.

Re: Flying Wild Alaska

Agree. Not enough flying to hold my attention. It is starting to look more like an Alaskan documentary than a flying show. HOWEVER, it is all we get here for a flying show so I guess it is better than nothing.

Flying Wild Alaska

Latest episode was full of ski flying in the cub, the 180, and then some guy flew his little twin to the north pole. I think they do a good job balancing the show with some good Alaska cultural stuff.

I'd need a ton of salsa to down anything from a walrus stomach...I always wonder what prompted the very first guy to eat some of that stuff.. like stink flipper... geez I think I'll bury this seal flipper in the dirt for 6 months then dig it up and eat it.. #-o [-o<

If anyone knows where I can take my plane in alaska to swap my O-470 for an IO-520 with new 3 blade prop for 20 grand I will fly up there tomorrow!

Looks like there at Lake Hood on the side where RUST flying services -near the transit tiedown area . Think I've seen the hanger before . $20,000 grand not bad for Prop/engine combo . From pictures on TV looks like a IO-520 -Probably very close to 185.Did notice they still had the Carb. Airbox still there. Maybe Kerry Knopp (PPonk) engine with 3 bladed prop. Like the "Alaska Bush Wheels" he put on. Will "Alaska Bush Wheels" work with Ski's ? JT has float plane brace and provisions for float/ski's already. Wonder if this engine swap includes the "kidney" tanks under the floor like 185. Inquiring minds want to know .

Re: Flying Wild Alaska

I think we need to help come up with some words for the theme song/jingle that comes on after every commercial break. My kid says it should be "OH-NO We're GON-NA DIE!"

The show is entertaining. I'm partial to Wings Over Canada for non life-threatening flying adventure.

Annoying, yes.
Irritating, yes.
Overly ditzy, yes.

But, I still think Ariel's cute as a button...

Re: Flying Wild Alaska

Truth be told I'm having a hard time getting into it this season. They're making it too much about the random crap they do and not enough about the flying. Also if Ariel ever gets her pilots license, I'm going to jump off the Stratosphere.

Re: Flying Wild Alaska

Aerial's transition to the 150 went as expected. Looked like a heavy handed takeoff rotation more at home with the 207. The whole lesson went down from there as she lost confidence. She's had some time in the Super Cub but I fault the instructor for not taking the time to familiarize the student with the new plane's handling. I'm no instructor but some slow flight and turns would have at least given her a head's up chance.

Wish there would have been a few more shots of Valdez landing competition. It's as unique of an event to the area as sled racing.

C'mon already with the cake not being secured.

Re: Flying Wild Alaska

Hey Dirtstrip I am with you I was hoping for some more stol competition in Valdez. Spinning the cub? Did they have chutes on? [-X Hmmm...

As far as Ariel goes, could anyone on the face of the planet actually be that ignorant? All that being said, I still watch the show and put the BS aside and just enjoy a few good flying scenes while I am wishing I was flying my 182 into Moose Creek or some other cool destination.

Re: Flying Wild Alaska

They didn't need chutes for the spin training--FAR 91.307(d)(2). It's a common misunderstanding, so there's also an opinion from the General Counsel--don't have the cite to that.

I would have liked to see the short field competition, too.

Doesn't she already have her license? But just for the sake of the show...

Seven days without flying, makes one weak.

According to the FAA Airman registry, Ariel only has her student certificate (4/2011). Ayla has her Private Pilot though.
