Federal AWB 2500 hydraulic retractable wheel skis. Completely rebuilt by Atlee Dodge's shop eight years ago, and only used a few times since. Ski bottoms were replaced, new plastic bottoms as well, hydraulics were all refurbished, new seals, etc, new hydraulic lines.
Interior: Three year old leather covered front seats, with memory foam. Fairbanks Aero Services rear sling seat. New wool headliner two years ago. Selkirk extended baggage compartment, Selkirk glare shield.
Radios: KX 170 B nav com, KT 76 Transponder with mode C, KR 85 ADF, Garmin 396 in panel dock, with XM weather, ACK 406 ELT, connected to the Garmin 396. NAT four seat intercom.

I think; not sure at all, but Sportsman discourages the use of VGs on their cuff.

Not what I've heard. Talk to Willie Stene about it and I'm sure he will say the VG's in addition to the Sportsman STOL will make subtle changes for the better. Both of their company 185s have Sportsman and Micro VGs, in addition to the wing-x extensions as well.

Mike, when did you move to Bozeman? Sorry to see you sell the plane--hope all is well.

This is a nice plane, I have seen it at several fly-ins.

I have to admit that I have been wrong about the paint scheme on this 170. When I first saw it I thought that only a drunk sailor would paint a plane that color. Then after landing my 182 on I-80 a few years back, I reconsidered.

If I would have had to put it down in a less hospitable place than a freeway, that paint scheme would have been a lot easier to spot than white and light blue. When I look at that plane now I think that that drunk sailor had a really good idea.

To be honest, Tim, I never have been wild about the paint scheme either. That said, the previous owner painted it in those colors for the very reason you mentioned. This is a guy who flew in AK for forty plus years.

On the other hand, my wife thinks the paint scheme is great.

I do love the plane in any case.

You have any more info on this PA-11? Not many of them around or listed for sale.
I have had a guy out that way mention having his PA-11 for sale at nearly the same price as MTV's 170. He is asking $58.5K for an -11. I asked if it had been totally rebuilt but he seems to evade answering any questions. I had assumed he was havng issues learning TW since he is looking for a nose dragger of some sort.

The PA-11 you are referring to belonged to a flying club based out of Bozeman. I know this because I was flying that thing just about everyday until the instructor and a student wrecked it. They were taxiing it when a big storm came through . A 50 kt wind gust lifted it up and flipped it on its back - it is completely totaled.

Just curious, the outdoor photos show a Hartzell, but the panel photo taken inside the hangar looks like it might show an MT prop?

That's correct. I got tired of Hartzell issuing ADs on prop hubs.....and the cost to comply. So, when they issued the latest AD I bought an MTV 15 prop. And, I'd never go back....the MT pulls like a tugboat, is incredibly smooth, and is the best all around prop I've found. Oh, and they actually have customer service.

Does the MT have the same toughness or resistance to damage as the "legacy" aluminum props? If I'm remembering right, I think the MT's are wood/composite with a metal leading edge??? I can easily believe they are more efficient and pull harder, but have they actually survived in real world harsh environments?

Definitely a sharply divided opinion on durability here in interior AK, even among highly-knowledgeable, active bush-flyers. Opinion seems to be pretty closely matched, for and against in my inquiries. Beyond that, there's purchase cost (a few thou more for an MT), field-repairability (dab on some JB weld and file it smooth with an MT), availability of local repair shops and related down-time (I believe MT props in the US still need to be shipped to FL for overhaul, although they are working on that), the sacrificial nature of a wood-core MT prop in a prop-strike (much more likely to spare damage to the crank and engine), reported smoothness of the MT, and finally, weight savings of an MT. On a 180 HP C-170 like Mike's, you shave close to 30 lbs on the very nose of the aircraft, which goes a long way to putting the CG back in the middle of the envelope and preserving useful load.

Yeah, I've been dwelling on these a lot lately. I think I'm persuaded. I won't plan on mowing any overgrown runways with it. I have seen a 401 Mac slice birch trees into stove length firewood, and you'd never know by looking at it.
